Batty and his rap - educating children.

I love Fern Gully and have watched it since I was a child. After more than 10 years, I watch it again the other day and actually acknowledged the messages it was sending about the environment and everything.

One thing that disturbed me greatly and that I had not realised when I was a child was Batty's character. I could not believe his rap - it was so dark and sad. In the past three years, I have been educated about animal testing, vivisection and animal abuse. And to see Batty's rap really saddening me, but shocked me that Fern Gully had portrayed such issues.

Although it seriously disturbed me, I commend the people who worked on the film for acknowledging such serious issues as well as the need to protect the environment. =)

I'm glad they covered it. Although at times Batty is a comedic character - its sad because we would not know how he really would be without animal testing. He's a really tragic character and its because of the humans.

yeah, I never really realized that until I saw it today (after 12 years). I just thought he was funny and a little insane, never realized how dark it was.

Then again, I like South Park's message about the rainforest a bit better. Watch the episode: Rainforest Schmainforest.

In the words of Douglas Adams, "We don't have to save the world--the world is big enough to look after itself! What we have to be concerned about, is whether or not the world we live in, will be capable of sustaining us in it."

While I think that we should plants as many trees as we cut down, and do minimal testing on animals (We've got criminals on death row for that) I refuse to feel guilty for simply trying to survive and live comfortably. I also refuse to lump all humans into one "bad"-"all humans are numb from the brain down"-category.
