A Question About Anna * * * Contains Spoilers * * *

How did Anna feel about Martins death?

She looked very calm and cold in her scenes after he died but I can't tell if she doesn't care or she is supressing her feelings. Does she feel sad, guilty, satisfied, indifferent or something else?

I'd be interested to hear other peoples opinions.

Given her emotional makeup (or lack thereof), Martyn could well just be another figure who came in and out of her life.

reply

Thats true but if she didn't feel any sadness or guilt at all then that would make her extremely callous bordering on psychopathic

reply

She could well be psychopathic or at least sociopathic. I don't see much, if any, warmth about Anna.

reply

Yeah maybe she is

The fact that she sought Stephen out and introduced herself told me he was the goal all along. I don't think she cared about Martyn. First of all, let's get real - if she did, why did she sleep with his father? And secondly, she just walks out after he falls. Brutal.

reply

Stephen didn't care about his son enough for it to stop him from sleeping with Anna but he still felt guilty about his death. I find Anna's reaction to Martyn's death hard to read. In the scene where she walks out she looks - to me - like she might be in shock or she just doesn't care. In her last scene when Stephen sees her at her mothers house she does look somewhat sad but Anna's such an enigmatic character its hard to tell how she felt about anything.

One could almost be led to believe that she was expecting something tragic to happen (as if she were marked by bad luck), hence her lackluster expression throughout.

I always had the impression that she was in such utter shock that something else so horrific had happened. Given the ending where she goes back to her first boyfriend, I think she was always searching for an answer in the familiar.

Martin looked like her brother so she went for him. I never got the idea that she looked to hurt people but it was inevitable with her. She was not nly tragic but engendered tragedy.

Haunting movie.

This post is extremely fascinating. I just finished watching the film and wondered what others had to say about this sick woman, Anna. Having never seen the movie before I wasn't sure what to expect. As time went on, I was waiting for some sort of breakthrough from her or Stephen, but it just never happened.

I will politely disagree and say that her behavior throughout the entire film was wicked, perverse and completely intentional. Anyone with half a soul could never bring that kind of pain to a person (Martin), let alone an entire family. Just because someone has "emotional baggage" does not excuse this kind of egotistical and selfish behavior. With that said, the same goes for Stephen. His lack of feeling for his wife and children was almost more disturbing considering he had a lot more to lose.

I completely agree that 'Damage' is utterly haunting and almost too real. The events that played out were gut-wrenching. This film serves as a cautionary tale and horrific reminder....no matter how sensual and seductive the flame, we always get burned.
