Best comedy of the 90s

The only thing that made me laugh harder at the theater than the "drama" foisted upon the audience was the subset of audience members themselves who actually took this seriously. I even saw Damage on a first date. Fortunately, the girl I was with, who was very cool and saw right through the cheap emotional manipulations as I did, laughed equally hard at all of Binoche and Irons's heavy breathing. In all seriousness, I've never laughed so hard at a film that tried to take itself this seriously. I was happy by the end to see the idiot sonny boy die, and my only regret was that Malle cheated us of the pleasure of Dr. Stephen Fleming experiencing a violent expiration as well. Although no movie is perfect, this one almost was...

I dislike the film too. It lacks any redeeming feature beneath a glossy veneer in spite of a good director and cast. There seemed to be a lack of chemistry between Irons and Binoche, which, from what I've read, was the actual case. Perhaps this is why I wasn't drawn by their affair, didn't care what happened to them or those around them, who were rather irritating on the sidelines.
