Complete Rubbish.......

Im an Irishman and have never liked this movie. Its completely inaccurate in nearly everyway possible and an insult to my countrymen. It also has to be igmitted that the Irish accent is the most inacurately portrayed of all accents. Tip; stop hiring Americans to play Irish people! Another incredibly annoying fact is that the British are always trying to claim our films and actors as theirs! Richard Harris was Irish, Liam Neeson is Irish, Pierce Brosnan is Irish, Gabriel Byrne is Irish etc. Ive even heard a British journalist refer to Colin Farrell as British, that was such a dumb remark it was hard to be insulted by it. If you want to see some good Irish movies made by Irish people check out the following:

My Left Foot

Intermission

The Crying Game

Into the West

In America

The Boxer

In the Name of the Father

The Field

The General and so on......

AGREED!!! theres no LACK of irish people in the world, irish people can act like hell and its not like they charge 10x the price to turn up and be irish!! people with EARS can tell the difference, and are embarrassed at those who cant!

i guess its an american thing - funny how they always say 'british' as if there were no distinguishing between england, ireland, scotland and wales. yet if you ask an american where theyre from theyll say 'pennsylvania' like thats supposed to mean something!!!

gah. what was i whinging about? liam neeson is hot as all hell, tom cruise should be shot and if i see one more person 'ride' a horse like that ill lose all control.

You really ought to learn not to speak in generalities because if you do I guanentee you wil always look like a fool. There are so many gross generalities in your statement there isn't much point offering comment.

epdug, Im from the North and I agree that only the Irish.........or if it has to be, tied in with the British........can make really good Irish movies.....

esp with the locations being here...........

I mean, 'The Devil's Own' is a laughable American Irish movie.......when Ford says the word 'IRA' in the movie, it is so

I want to all men!

reply

I am Irish too the film was total rubbish. The way the Americans try to take off the Irish accent is brutal they have being trying it for years but still can't get it mind you the way a lot of Irish people talk now with that stupid fake accent is ten times worse than Americans taking off the Irish accent. In another twenty years the majority of Irish people will be talking with this sickening accent. We are losing our culture.

I'm an Irishman and have always liked this movie.

I don't care about the inaccuracy's, the accents or anything else. I enjoy it for what it is, an entertaining movie.

In response to jjoecostello1985's comment: I appreciate your comment...the Irish commentators here are entitled to their own opinions - still, while they may feel that the (Irish) accents in the movie are not perfect (or far from perfect), I wish all of the irate Irish commentators would not seem so "venomous" in their comments...Cruise and Kidman (and other actors in the movie) made efforts to learn their respective accents...let's give all of them credit for at least trying...I'm Jewish with no Irish heritage at all - but I love the UK...

The thing I find about Far And Away dss is that the main characters are generic leads in that type of film who are played by stars who have no real handle on the Irish character or culture. The characters too often fall back on stereotypes that do not realisitically reflect Irish people or form a 3 dimensional character in their own right. The accents are the least of the films problems although they are frankly terrible and although as an Irishman I am bound to have a better ear for the Irish accent I find it hard to believe that other people cannot see the difference in accent and performance between the leads and the Irish actors in the film. I have no venom towards the film. I merely find it to be a bad cartoon with poor lead performances..badly realised characterisations and a tendency towards cliche and stereotyping. The film simply failed to entertain me. I can understand why other people..particularly Americans..would like the film but I just find it to be a bad fairytale about paddywhackery.

The UK and Ireland are different places: the UK consists of England, Scotland and Wales (and some might include Northern Ireland too, while some don't). To imply that Ireland is a part the UK is inaccurate, and quite frankly offensive to a lot of Irish people, including me.

reply

These Irish are too sensitive. I'm Cajun and nobody ever gets a Cajun accent right in a move. SO WHAT? It's MAKE BELIEVE. Nobody would ever believe Tom Cruise is Irish. He doesn't drink! That's a joke, son. Laugh.

reply

Tom Cruise actually has Irish ancestry.

Intelligence and purity.

Read a book about the Irish Catholic experience. Then visit Palestine,India and Africa to see the English at work.
I give the film a 5.

Hey, Mick, reality check!!! When they used Americans with American accents portraying people from other countries, people whined. Now that Americans try to approximate other accents, people whine. If they used "Irish" actors, people would whine because perhaps they're not from the right part of Ireland. If you want historical and geographical accuracy, go read books or watch public TV documentaries. The rest of us prefer to be entertained without taking it so God-damned seriously. Here's an idea for you: go to Hollywood, get a job as a director/producer, and show us all how you'd do it, so then others can whine about what you do incorrectly. Otherwise, shut the *beep* up and enjoy the movie.

Here, here jmim-1! They're not happy unless they have something to whine about.

reply

Why do Americans think that Irish people talk like leprechauns and spend all day in the pub?

The same reason why Irish people(or everyone outside the U.S.)think Americans are all obese and ignorant.

reply

Amen to that, Jmim-1!

reply

I guess rational thought is beyond some people.

reply

Harrison Ford cannot act at all.

reply

What is your point?

reply

I suppose his point (as is the point of 90% of the posts on IMDB) is that Americans are ignorant, make crappy movies, and all around suck in general. Very tiring to read constant bashing.

Oh Jaysus, I completely agree.

20 minutes into the movie when there was nothing else on and I was almost dying laughing. Seriously it's terrible!

First scene when the father returns from the dead, oh God!

And what was with the line " Oh Frederick, my horse just farted. " Eh....can anyone say crazy?

It's a good comedy but nothing more. Reminds me of Father Ted.

I agree with CorgisforMe. I mean sure the accents weren't accurate, but the story was made for a very entertaining movie. And when you think about it isn't that what's most important?
