What was the purpose of the cage scene in this movie? Does anyone know?

As far as I could tell, it was just to show what morons these guys were!

I'm actually from Seymour and the cage thing was invented but we did have to jump off the Rockford bridge. I could be wrong I'm from a different generation but my father never mentioned it.

I heard that the cage was called the rumble seat hence the song.

Check the ZZTop song called "Master of Sparks". The song is about being strapped into a steel cage and pushed off the back of a moving flatbed truck. This interview with Billy Gibons explains:

Larry McMurtry, the writer of Falling, is a native Texan. Maybe he heard about it from ZZ Top, he porbably knows them.
