ITV's Wuthering Heights cast.

Remember that 3 hour ITV adaptation we all thought came to nothing?? Well, we were wrong. The Telegraph provides some news on the cast and compares it with the new silver screen version:

"In this version a distraught Heathcliff will kill himself on hearing the news about Cathy's death"

what?? so the film would just end when catherine died??

bygones!

reply

No, i think the ITV version is ending that way. I have no idea what the film is going to do. I thought that was in reference to the ITV production anyway.

reply

well whatever, the point i was making is will it just end when cathering dies?

bygones!

reply

Yep, but that doesn't really suprise me. Most adaptations end with Cathy's death. It's unfortuante, but it's true.

reply

I saw only the 1992 and 1939 versions.
From the two the 1992 movie followed the book pretty closely. The Oscar winning, 1939 version stopped right after Cathy's death which really surprised me, I had no idea before started to watch the movie.
To be honest I'm petrified that they are making a version where Heathcliff commits suicide after Cathy's death. Why not write a completely new story then? One of the most important aspects of the story is Heathcliff's actions after Cathy's death, how he tries to get his revenge and make everyone's life miserable. Changing this is changing his character thus changing the whole plot.
There are certain cases like this one, imo when it just seems so unnecessary to make such changes to the original. It feels more like butchering as oppose to adapting.
Of course, it's only my opinion and I cannot be objective as I'm in love with the original version written by Emily Bronte. lol

reply

Oh, i completely agree with you. But i've seen many, many adapations now and i've come to almost expect that they will end with Cathy's death. It's quicker to name the adaptations that do include the second half than don't. I assume you haven't seen the 1970 version wher Hindley kills Heathcliff then?

reply

What???!!! LOL
No, I haven't, thank goodness. Why don't these people just write their own darn story? And call it something else, not Wuthering Heights so that you won't expect the original story?
I really don't mind adaptations, but this sounds awful. I really hope that at least the feature won't be making such butchering mistakes. Can they just follow the book for COL?

reply

I totally agree with you. The second part of book is as well important as first one. The whole Heathcliff's character and point of all story is there. I will be really very disappointed if they won't do second half of book.

reply

I also agree with you, ellenripley. Well said.

I don't like the idea of Heathcliff killing himself after Cathy's death at all, but to be honest to have him killed by Hindley sounds even worse. (I haven't seen the 1970 version either).

Let's hope they stick to the book in the film version at least...

More news on the cast, and they are doing the second generation after all. Yay:

Thanks for that, silcock.
I checked them out and I'm liking these actors. They seem like great choices for the parts. And woohoo for the second generation.
I'll put the link up on the Wuthering Heights (2010) board, if you don't mind.

reply

Hey. This isn't for the movie (2010) this is for the television production that's going to air in the UK this year, they start filming on Monday.

But i agree they are a good cast.

reply

LOL, I messed it up, didn't have time to read it through. Just admired the actors. Oh, well. So we still can't be sure if Heathcliff's gonna commit suicide or Hindley's gonna kill him in the new version, right? Back to sleepless nights :-)
