Natalie Portman the new Catherine Earnshaw!!!!!!!

I know there's already a thread for this but i thought i'd make a more prominent one, in case anyone missed it. Here's the link:

I'm fairly pleased overall. Far better than that god awful Lilo rumour that was going around. I had been hoping for an up nad coming Brit (Felicity Jones) but i can deal with Natalie, she sort of looks like a Cathy and can give a good performance, so congradulations Natalie. She's a bit old, but she looks young so it works. She reminds me of Merle Oberon in a werid way as well. I'm not over fond of that verison though.

reply

She reminds me Kiera. She got Cathie's look, I just can't imagine her to play Cathy. But maybe she will be good, we will see. I can't wait to see, who gonna be new Heathcliff.

reply

Yeah, i'm having the same issues as you. But i'm optimistic. My friend advised me to watch her role in Cold Mountain, where she's Cathy esque apparently. i'll give it a try. I'm both excited and worried about Heathcliff.

Natalie Portman could be ok Ive only seen her acting with some decormurm in modern
films in the other Boylan gal she was about as lively as a door matte.

Wurthering Heights is the pinncal of victorian gothic, althought I dont rate Keria Knightly as an actor I think she has more of the mystium that Cathy has throughtout the story. I would rather a lesser known British actor take Cathy part
as there no prior expection. As for Heathcliff maby need to trawl the boads of the Bristish Sheakpear Company.

I'm hoping English isn't your first language.

I don't know, Portman is undoubtably a talented actress and she might successfully pull this off. I don't understand why no-ones is casting a lesser known actual British actress to play the part, first a french actress, now an american. I know its for mass appeal, but there is nothing wrong with picking a fresh talent. Look at the hunt for Scarlett O'Hara for example, that was a success all round.

I completely agree. Cathy is a very hard role to get right, just as hard as Heathcliff. I've always considered Juliet Binnoche one of the best actors of her generation but i still don't think she managed to fully capture Cathy, it'll be interesting to see how Natalie does.

Apparently, Natalie has now quit:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/bazbamigboye.ht ml?in_article_id=564930&in_page_id=1794

I don't get it... first she actively pursued the director to get the part and then resigned from it? Odd. Now I guess it's back to square one.

BTW, the article mentions Michael Fassbender as a possible Heathcliff. I'm not really familiar with him, so I cannot comment on that.

I was just going to post that myself. What an odd thing to do. Ughh that's pissed me off. Hopefully we'll get a better Cathy now though. To think i bloody defended her as well. Grrrr. We're not back to square one we still have Andrew Linclon as Edar.

reply

Yeah, let's hope for that.

I'm just annoyed because the whole bloody production has been sent into chaos apparently. Micheal Fassbender might be Heathcliff though, which might work.

reply

Yes, I think it was, frankly, quite an irresponsible move on Natalie's part.

Like I said above, I don't know anything about Michael Fassbender... I have checked his filmography here and it seems I haven't seen anything he's been in. There aren't any good pics, either.

I've only seen him in a few things, but he's a good actor. Very intense. Here's a couple of pics:

In that last pic he's with Romola Garai. Who looks a bit cathyesque with the black hair actually.

reply

Thanks a lot!

I guess he might be a good Heathcliff.

For some reason I couldn't look at the first link but the second opened. I'm liking this guy, I think he can pull Heathcliff off.
I'm actually happy that Natalie left, hopefully they'll give the role to a young English actress who can appreciate the role enough and won't butcher the accent.

We can expect a replacement in days:

I hope Mabury sticks to his promise of casting a Brit this time.

reply

Is it wrong of me to have been rather happy when I heard Natalie had quit ?! (How awful of her was it to quit though after she had pursued them and had casting approval on Heathcliff though? I mean it seems really unprofessional) Now they might consider young british actresses like Amelia Warner, Felicity Jones or Hayley Atwell.

Michael Fassbender would be a good choice. He's no Henry Cavill but he would still be a good Heathcliff (As long as he doesn't have to cry- When he cried in Hex tears would only come from one eye and it was really weird and creepy...) and he is a good actor. He looks great in his new film with Romola Garai http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-3VBkORvcg. I would be happy with him as Heathcliff.

Since I just posted the trailer for Angel- I really hope they don't cast Romola Garai as Cathy. I haven't liked her in any film yet and she keeps turning up...

Im glad Natalie left. Anyone playing Cathrine should be british, or English preferably. This is important, not only to get the accent right, but also the looks right. Somehow Juliette Binoche was wrong for me when seing Catherine.

By all means, Binoche is a good actress, but she's too French/"classy" French for being able to do Catherine. As Catherein is freewilled and wild, Binoche weren't able to leave her sophisticated apparence.
Though a charachter like Catherine is difficult, just as Heathcliff. But I rather liked Anna Calder-Marshall though.

I do agree, that an English girl is better. Especially, as i understand that Heathcliff and Cathy are going to speak with a bit of a Yorkshire accent for some of this production. Which will be easier for an English actress than an American who's never really heard the accent before.

Personaly, i don't think there has ever been a really good Cathy. Which is a shame because she's a brilliant character. The problem i have with most of them is that they often portray Catherine as a much calmer stable influence on the relationship. Which she shouldn't be. If there had been any sort of stable influence on their relationship the book wouldn't be they way it is.

That's the one thing i really like about Anna Calder-Marshall's Cathy, is that she was just as mad, bad and wild as Heathcliff was, which is how she should be. Although, i'll admit Cathy does have some childlike qualities about her too. Overall, that adapation is a bit hammy though.

The thing is most of the Heathcliff's have been very good, but the Cathy's have let it down, and if Heathcliff and Cathy both aren't up to scratch it just doesn't work.

reply

An important thing for me though, if they're going to film this again:
The actors have to be young!!

I've seen adaptions of this where the Heatcliff and Cathy have wrinkles, and very apparently are in the 30's, and this in scenes where they're supposed to be teens. It's really akward when their general behavior is so childlike.
And it's much easier to make an actor look old by make-up, rather than opposite.
