Things I don't understand: Women's health & Inheritance laws

Why are the women all so frail? I understand perfectly the childbirth issues so that I understand. But how is it that you fall and need to leave at another house for three months to recover?

Also, once Edgar died, why would the estate go to Heathcliff and not his son Linton?

In the book, catherine is bitten by a dog, and spends five weeks at Thrushcross grange. the tv version may have made it a longer period for some reason.
Again, in the book, when edgar dies catherine inherits his estate, but as she is a married woman, her husband (linton) has control of her property. After he dies, for some reason, she remains in the power of heathcliff and he controls the property (possibly linton made a will in his favour or something).

Linton's will left everything to Heathcliff....supposedly. I don't remember this part of the book, however.
