There seem to be what seems like 4 different cuts of this film, so is it fairly gruesome and gory? Or just creepy and atmospheric? I'm planning on buying the 5-disc set that randomly appeared at our local 'Borders' book/movie store lol

Not gruesome or gory. One brutal moment at the beginning of the movie and some amount of gore (hand, head blown up), but not much.
Definitely atmospheric. Sometimes creepy. But also visually stunning, weird, out of the box and very intelligent. If horror can be arthouse this is it.
Out of that 5 disc set, you only have 2 versions of this movie & a musical soundtrack cd. Everything else are documentaries. But DAMN, this move was good....

I think two versions of this film are enough, and the documentaries are well worth a look to help understand Stanelys convictions and motivations.
