I don't understand what happened to Carrey's character. Something about Maple Drive? Did he hit someone while drunk or? And served in prison? I don't get it. What was the whole point of that (they alluded to it when Carrey and his dad were in the restaurant but nowhere else).

The parents would not accept Carrey's character being drunk and Matt knew that they would not approve of his being gay. This all came out when the son-in-law confronts the father after Matt comes home. I hope this helps
