something I don't get

How can Mr Cane know who the tenth fighter is but not the 9th one, you would think it would be the other way around.

reply

I can only speculate but it seems he had ears and eyes everywhere. According to what I have read on the script, he had planned this con for a long time and paid off the tenth fighter ahead of time just in case. But there were clues that helped confirm his suspiscions. When they were drafting the terms of the bet and they stated that Olivare county (prison's location) is also Diggstown. Couple that with the warden's promise to "See him again" and the obvious reputation of Menosa as one of the deadliest of fighters, it was likely educated speculation that he had planned for.

That still does not explain how he did not know who the 9th fighter was going to be?

Sorry..you're right. I would guess (as he said) he snuck the guy into the G__D__ basement of the boarding house :) His whole operation was basically him, the fighter, the instigator who took bets, and the sister. Not very probably he could manage the con, their safety, the sabotaging, and know every fighter. They only had to prove each fighter fighting was eligible which was done.

Here's the thing. He thought Torres was or possibly could be the last fighter. He had no idea they would find and bring in Hammerhead. Remember, he thought, and there is no indication otherwise, that the guy who walked away from his fight was a forfeit.

I haven't seen it in a long time, but my take based on my memory is that Caine felt that Roy could beat any eligible fight except for Torres so he bribed Torres. Gillon however surprises Caine by bringing in Hagan as a ringer. Caine was not prepared for this, but Roy manages to beat Hagan anyway.

Gillon had two ringers. One Caine new was a potential fighter and bribed, and one who surprises Caine. Roy take out one by fighting that fight of his life, and the other is in Caine's pocket.

reply

You have to remember that they weren't even expecting a 10th fight. So the surprise ringer was Hammerhead.

Caine had no idea Torres would be fighting, everybody just assumes he knew this and the dive was part of a long con. In reality its more likely Torres just owed Caine a favor from their time in prison, and Caine fortuitously used that to get an easy win and show Gillon his ass at the same time.

reply

No...Caine knew that Torres would be fighting (or at least he suspected it).

He didn't know that Gillon would sneak Hagan in as the "10th" fighter. He figured it would be the 9 fighters and then Torres.

reply

im sure he still had contacts in the prison and could have got word from inside

Something I forgot to bring up.

Not only did Gabe suspect Torres would be there...that was part of his plan from the beginning.

Right after Torres beats Wolf, Gabe goes visit Wolf in the infirmary. Wolf asks if he did good, and Gabe says that it was perfect for the thing they were setting up.

reply

since i've watched this movie twice in the last week or so, this is my 2cents, Gabe probably kept the idea of it in his head that it was possible, especially when he agreed to the terms of the bet.. and when Hagen came out for the last fight he just figured HRP, had to beat him to win the bet, hence why the premature celebration at the end..

My take on it is this: Remember that the Warden said that out of the 6 escapes the prison had experienced, 5 of them took place after Caine had arrived. I believe Torres and Caine were partners where Torres did those fighting bouts in the prison as a distraction so Caine could guide those prisoners to escape. So when Torres became the last fighter, he took the dive because Caine and he had been partners and Caine wanted him to. JMO.
