Steve having a family?

Maybe I'm wrong,but I thought Steve had a family at the beginning,but later in the show he was single!

In the Jake and the Fatman Diagnosis Murder pilot Mark Sloan has no family, i.e. no Steve, yet by the time of this he exists!
