Important Themes

Although I found the movie to be dated in some ways after watching it again recently, there were also some profound slices of reality touched on that one might not expect in a movie like this.

Our gov't forming alliances with bad men abroad is something we all know happens, but back in 1992 I'm not sure this was as widely known.

Then you've got quotes like:

“Forget all this Judeo-Christian *beep* The same people who taught us virtue are the very ones who have enslaved us..."

"I think you know that there's no such thing as an American anymore. No Hispanics, no Japanese, no blacks, no whites, no nothing. It's just rich people and poor people..."

I think the director was trying to make a few basic points about our society. That along with the soundtrack really made this movie work for me.

Sure it was. Doesn't the name Manuel Noriega ring a bell? I can imagine that this movie based Guzman on Noriega.

The main theme has a sample from the Death Wish II theme, which also starred a young Larry Fishburne.
