How much was did the potion cost? How much was that check for?

I have for years tried to zoom in/figure out how much she wrote the check for, but have never known. Does anyone know?

in some interview, one of them posed the question, would you buy a magic potion for 1 million dollars? She could have just thrown that figure out randomly during the interview or it could have been the amount they were thinking of while acting. Since its the number she throws out in the interview.

I found and bought the actual cheque prop a few years ago and Meryl wrote 1.000.000 $ on it.
Remember this was a lot of money back in the very early 90's.
Here's a picture of it:

Thanks for sharing your treasure with us!

Awesome prop. I enjoyed learning the answer, too. Thanks for sharing.

reply

Oh wow how cool! Where did you buy it?

reply

Ha, that was a lot of money back then. Well its a lot of money now!

That's clearly one million dollars, not one thousand. One thousand would've been chump change to her character in that movie, regardless of the early 90's.

Who said anything about one thousand? Everyone here is saying $1 million.

reply

Now THAT is awesome!

reply

WOW! So awesome for you to share that! I always guessed around that much but never had proof! Lol did you pay a million dollars for it? haha.

reply

I think it's relative.. if all you had in the world was $100 then the potion would cost $99. If you were super duper rich, then the potion would cost millions.

reply

Hello! I love that prop! I would be very interested in buying it from you if you are interested in selling it?
Thank you!

As you might remember Lisle clearly said that the cost of the potion was different for everybody.

As Madeline finds out Helen also used the potion, she asks how much Helen paid, to which Helen replies with: "Everything I had and that was CHEAP!" Considering that answer, the cost of the potion is really how much you can afford, e.g. your entire fortune....

reply

I imagine they charged as much as they could get, but regarding Helen's "and that was CHEAP!" I always took that to mean she thought it was priceless or invaluable to get her youth/looks back, not that she necessarily got it for a low amount. But yes, fat, insane Helen might have been charged $50k which could have broke her, and Madeline was charged $1m, which might have been their remaining fortune. But I imagine Helen wrote a few books and made some money before she managed to even hear about the potion, so she was probably charged a lot, or maybe owed them part of her future income. I can't see letting the potion go for a really cheap price.

reply

Helen said that she took the potion on October 26, 1985, which would've been shortly after leaving the institution.

Apologies for bumping this thread but thank you for solving that years long mystery, don-cotton-1! The first time I saw this film was when I was pretty young and this has always been a point of curiosity for me.

I actually started overthinking it and wondered whether it was a huge amount of money, or something more sinister, like selling your soul or something haha!

From what I can tell, it sounds like a crappy potion. It seems to trap the soul of the drinkers in their bodies, and they are still alive, even after their body gets "killed." If that sorceress truly wanted to make a potion to preserve eternal youth, she should have designed it to allow the drinker to regenerate if they got hurt, injured, or dismembered. That didn't happen in this movie.

reply

DONT BUY IT THEN?🤔

reply

The cost was her soul.
