An underrated and moving gem....

This is a movie that I'm always telling people that lived in teh 1970's to watch. Great music, believable characters, real drama, humor, etc.

I was born in Detroit so maybe it affected me more than say someone that lives in Iowa. Mike Binder has gone on to do other projects but this is his finest. I was suprised to see that he wrote "Coupe de ville" and "Indian Summer", two other humanist stories that with humor & charm.

I agree. I'm a Northwest Detroit native, went to Mackenzie High in the 60's. The characters and tone are spot on. Went to school with guys like these and some friends were periferally involved in low level drugs. Not a false note. The sort of aimless hanging out during & after high school in somewhat bleak neighborhoods is captured nicely. Ambassador Bridge did allow pedestrians then. A friend & I used to every Spring walk from downtown Detroit across & down river to Amherstburg & take the BobLo Boat back, despite the Border Control ban. Funny thing is that kids today in Detroit & Windsor still hang out aimlessly, doing similar things and get themselves into similar situations. Must be the factories & the border environment. People on the Coasts just don't know and can't envision what it's like. Mike Binder got it right.

I don't live in Michigan, nor did I grow up in the 70s. But this movie is just brilliant--criminally underrated. It should be required viewing in every film school.
