Why on earth is this rated so low?

Why would such a good movie be so low on here??
I thought the movie was a 8/10 at least.

Welcome to imdb, where good movies never receive the credit they deserve.

"Am I the only one who sees the giant monkey!?"

Let me fix that for you:

"Welcome to imdb, where the movies I like never receive the credit I want them to recieve."

reply

True.. but 6.8/10?

Not even 7/10 average? ):

I agree. I think this film offers a fresh take on the whole vampire genre. finally someone with some real creativity. It's a masterpeice.

reply

Far from it. I thought it was very slow paced and although it had a pretty neat idea the rest of the plot was very bad.

reply

It was a fresh take, but the plot killed it. Too many wasted scenes and not enough drama, scares, or creeps. I didn't mind the slow pace, but the telling of the story was uneven. I wish this movie was like "The Blair Witch Project" where the drama builds. Perhaps, the protagonist could become more like a vampire thirsting for blood and wanting to kill in lieu of immortal life and youth. Why kill the old man since he was the antagonist and not Perlman? I didn't get why Perlman hated Gris so. It seemed he should have hated his uncle more. The bathroom scene was good. The making-up the dead was good. The fight between Perlman and falling off the roof was good. However, the girl knocking out Perlman was almost comical and the cremation scenes didn't need to be extended. The movie was low budget, so Del Toro should have kept it low budget instead of trying for too many artsy scenes.

You said that like it's something bad.

There are fast paced and slow paced films.
Pace of film is not an indication of it's quality ;)

I never got the feeling that he intensely needed blood. Maybe it was because he never actively hunted for it, just that he started drinking it whenever it presented itself.

That would be my only complaint in an otherwise good movie.

Him licking a mens room floor gave me a pretty good indication that he intensely needed blood...

reply

I thought he just never went that far. In the end he was clearly becoming somekind of monster, but most of the film he holds himself together about that.

reply

Well, I just finished watching the movie and although I liked the premise, I think it's sad that such an interesting story ends in a fist fight on a rooftop. Really, couldn't Del Toro have come up with something more cerebral or mysterious? There was a fascinating build-up that ended in a gore fest.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

Apart from other issues that I think the movie doesnt deserve 8/10, did u really like the acting??

reply

Yes the acting I enjoyed alot, the old man who owns the store was great, as was teh wonderful Ron Pearlman.

reply

agreed. just finished watching this. 8/10 at least. the actor licking the blood from the bathroom floor is shocking thrilling and haunting. masterpiece! why haven't i seen it earlier?!

reply

I have no idea, I gave it 8/10 too. Slow paced films never seem to get the credit they deserve. Personally it is my favorite vampire film. I think when vampires are in a film people expect either action or a camp experience.

reply

I don't know. I finally just got around to watching it now. Part of the reason it was lower on my list was the mediocre reviews. It's really a good film though. I guess the deciding factor will be how well you relate to the little girl?
