I wonder the same. the little boy in "Mimic" is also mute.

That little girl was so cool! She didn't bat an eyelid when she saw the state her grandpa was in and she even managed to save him from Ron Perlman's uncle (can't remember the guy's name)

reply

she was straight gangsta hitting the uncle in his domepiece.

i havent seen the mute in mimic, but there is also a mute in The Devil's Backbone. What about Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy?

She's no mute. She talks, it's only that Guillermo del Toro wanted that her only word in the movie was 'abuelo'. He says so in the DVD commentary.

there's not a great deal of dialogue in the entire film. the acting is relied upon and that is very subdued for a film of this genre. brilliant stuff.

i'd guess that if the girl spoke (more) it would take something away from the subtle demonstrations of the relationship with her grandfather.

GDT's commentary sounds like it would be a great help.

I think Aurora's just a quiet-natured kid.

I loved how her grandfather took her in as an equal partner in his strange and dangerous adventure and never talked down to her about it, or tried to keep her from following him - she would have, and I guess he knew that, so he just took her along instead. It's the stuff of fable and fairy tale, sure, the heroic child, but it also speaks of a culture that doesn't typically baby children once they're no longer babies.

Their relationship was beautiful. It's what made me fall in love with the film.
