It Was... OK

I watched Cronos for the first time last night and when I came to imdb.com to give it a 7 I fully expected it to have an average in the 8s. It just seems like the kind of movie that would appeal to the crowd here. There's vampire lore, a little girl, a kind old grandpa, evil rich guy, Ron Pearlman, and a director who is hot today.

I thought it presented some interesting ideas, looked nice, and I enjoyed Ron. The plot wasn't air tight, the little girl was basically useless female audience appeasement, and the story felt quaint given the possibilities. I could recommend it to the crowd interested in the niche, actors, or director.

Can't stop the signal.

Evidently, the part that explains the 'manuscript' for the Cronos device was edited out, which would help explain alot more than what you see in the movie.
Remember when the uncle said to Jesus "but it also contains some rules, very precise and strict rules about the way it should be used".
Obviously, Abuelo Jesus didn't know how to use it.

I enjoyed it a lot, but I agree that it is a very good idea, slightly ruined by a lack of imagination about how to progress the story. It could have been a lot better.

I hate to say it, but I agree. I think it was a very good short film dragged out for too long.

A story like this has the potential to be really good, but as far as what they did with it here, it was just alright. 7/10 for me too.

Yep, as others have said... wonderful premise constrained by a small budget and a less than stellar finale.

I just watched Cronos. I can't really see how it has so low rating. It's great movie, 9/10.

I really liked the laid-back stylishness of it, the way it keeps everything somewhat mysterious till the end, while explaining enough to be enjoyable and logical. Cinematography is better than 95% of modern hollywood, and it has quite suitably tension and chills in it. General weirdness of the movie is what really makes it stand out though. That's never bad thing.

What do you find wrong in Cronos?

everyone is too wooden. The grandpa explains the thirst is burning him, but we never see that do we? we never actually see him suffer that much. the actor doesn't truly show a lot of emotion.
Yes the licking of the floor can be a showing of his terrible cravings, but besides that scene I saw nothing that implied that he was THAT thirsty. that was a big problem for me, it had nothing do with the budget being small or anything like that.

In fact no one in the movie shows that much emotion, and I am NOT Asking for over acting either, do not get fooled into thinking I wanted to see the Grandpa screaming and running like Nic Cage or anything like that.

The movie was lacking in that department a lot. people felt like robots most of the time.

Also the story went nowhere in many parts of the movie. Why would the rich guy just let the Grandpa leave after they first meet... seriously why? Why did the rich guy only have his son helping him? I really doubt getting a couple of extras to play security guys would have cost THAT much at the time this was made... that was so stupid.

Why did the nephew kill the Grandpa with the car? that literally made no sense. NO SENSE At all... a lot of things in the movie are nonsensical. and that has nothing to do with budget.
I read that Guillermo wrote this 10 years before he made it but it feels very sloppy. I have seen student Films on youtube that are more coherent than this.

I just watched it for the first time and I agree with your judgement: it was OK, but not more. Perhaps my expectations were a bit too high given how hot the director is right now. But clearly, we have seen better debut movies. Some sequences were well done - the blood drinking in the bathroom or the quirky cremator guy, but the rest was just too slow, clumsy, and not very original.
