This movie sucks

In my opinion, mind you. ;)

The only reason to watch it is for the cartoon b * tches, which is probably the sole reason why this movie was even made.

Good for waxing your carrot, but not much else.

Yea it's really bad but I think that's because the original R script was trashed and then a new one was quickly cobbled together. The original script could have been awesome

Apparently they had Ralph Bakshi pushing to make it an R-rated story (I think he initially wanted it to be about this half human/half toon girl who hated herself, and wanted to confront and presumably kill her father) and Kim Basinger (voice of Holli) lobbying to make it PG and family friendly. When they compromised, it wound up being this mess.

I like the premise behind it, I guess, but watching it again it's like it couldn't decide what it wanted to be. They wanted it to be the next Roger Rabbit, obviously, but I think a lot of people forget that WFRR had genuine heart and emotion behind its characters (especially Roger himself). The adult themes and special effects definitely helped, but they weren't the only factors as to why it became a big hit.

Like this quote suggests WFRR succeeded in large part because of its warmth, so I'm not sure how making 'Cool World' (IMHO an utterly repellent and at times rather ugly film) 'more adult' would have made it more endearing. As it stands some of the risqué background gags is already quite off-putting.

That said, the Italian film,'Volere Volare' which came out around the same time as 'Cool World' demonstrates that it is possible to make a winning and warm 'adult' spin on the live-action collides with animation concept.

In 1992, it seems like the only people who actually saw Cool World were critics. And boy, oh boy did they not like it. Roger Ebert, in his one star review, stated that “Cool World is a surprisingly incompetent film” while Owen Gleiberman, in his review for Entertainment Weekly (a not entirely awful C rating), remarks that “the blend of live action and animation is too crude to enthrall us”. Lloyd Bradley, of Empire, in another one star review (of seemingly millions), remarked that “Cool World has nothing to recommend it. Hopeless.” So far you’re probably wondering why I am even bothering to recommend it. Well, the old adage applies: “time heals all wounds”. And time, in my opinion, has healed Cool World.

But, hampered by a PG-13 rating and a budget minuscule in comparison to an in-their-prime Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis production, there was no way, only four years after Who Framed, Cool World could convince you that the world presented was real. Who Framed was such a technical marvel that right out the gate it smashed all immediate challengers. However, decades later, we are more forgiving of films with lesser budgets and lesser effects. For some reason, and I am glad for it, we tend to look at the stories and intentions more than the technicalities because we know most films in a certain time period did not have the same access to funds and technology that the heavy-hitters did.

Podcast: Cool World (1992)

Nick and Chris get back on track as we review the nonsensical animation/live action Brad Pitt vehicle Cool World!

It's Who Framed Roger Rabbit for perverts as Holli Would (Kim Basinger), a nymphomaniac cartoon character attempts to seduce Jack Deebs (Gabriel Byrne), a hugely popular comic book creator who may be suffering from mental problems. Holli draws Jack into the "cool world," a horrible nightmare world where cartoon characters murder each other all day. Meanwhile Detective Frank Harris (Pitt) tries to keep the peace and enforce the most important law of Cool World: that noids (humans) and doodles (cartoons) cannot, under any circumstances, have sex. It should be noted the film is not nearly as easy to follow as this description. Join us as we try to stay cool while outlining everything that's wrong with this movie.
