Rewritten without his knowledge?!

So, the film's Trivia states the script was completely rewritten without Bakshi's knowledge.
Ok, so that happens. Now, what I don't get: he's the bloomin' director. He kinda needs the finished script to shoot the darn thing. How does it matter that it can be rewritten a billion and one times when ultimately it ends up in his hands to film and control the animation how ge wants.
Sounds more like an excuse for why it flopped.

Nope. It was rewritten by the producer. And it just so happened that the producer's father owned the studio at the time.

Since they control the money, producers typically have more control than directors (unless there's a final cut clause in the contract, and that usually only happens when you're a proven box office success or willing to shoot on a shoe-string budget).

The concept still kind of sounds a bit silly, but the mix between live action and animation on the child would have been pretty badass. Paramount bought the film and everything was looking good, until the producer of the film, Frank Mancuso, Jr. decided to have the film completely rewritten behind Bakshi’s back and threatened to sue Bakshi if he didn’t direct it. So, now, we have a lamely-written script and a director in charge of something that he thinks is complete shit. So, are you a hopeful individual and still think this movie is going to be good? Well, don’t be, because it isn’t.

The two then go out for dinner, where Deebs sees that Holli has more interest in other men than him when she begins to sing with Frank Sinatra, Jr. Wait, what? What the hell? Oh, and wait! I forgot to bitch about Kim Basinger’s constant interference with this film! See, during the production of this film, Basinger pushed a shit-ton of people around and made a lot of demands. She also made a lot of changes to the script, adding in this scene because she wanted to sing a duet with Sinatra, Jr. Also, halfway through production of the film, she wanted the script rewritten so she could show it to sick kids in the hospital. Okay, yeah, that is nice and all, but you’re in the middle of filming a movie with scenes focusing on human-cartoon intercourse. I think it’s a bit too late to rewrite the movie for kids.

Exactly! Alot of people don't realize that unless you're a huge name proven director it's the producer that has all the power.
