I'm confused about this...

...did Eddie murder his own wife - which would mean that he hired "Kay" to act like his wife in front of the neighbors

or did Eddie murder some unknown-to-us girlfriend - while his wife was away for the night?

I know I must be missing the whole point of the movie, but I really don't know who he killed (the first time).

Thanks!

reply

I think he murdered an unknown woman, and had his wife go somewhere.

Ya, when Kline confronts her she says something to the effect of,"He told me to go away."
She also says that right before she left,(to scare her) Eddy told her about the whole thing. That way if anything happened she could be considered an accomplice.
That way she would keep her mouth shut about it all. That's why she said she went to Canada to try and forget everything.

The woman he initially killed was just some random whore.

What I really didn't understand was the following point: where was the real Kay while the "fake Kay" was going on the boat trip, playing baseball, et cetera, with the husband and their neighbours? How is it possible that the Parkers had never spot Otis' real wife? Where was she all the time?
Was she living somewhere else / working in another country / what...?

reply

I don't think Eddy Otis was ever married to this "Kay". I think her real name is Oliver Kamen and she was hired by him to stage the whole thing. She was hired to pretend to be his wife in front of their neighbors. Afterwards, Eddy hired some unknown prostitute to sleep with Kevin Kline's character and sent "Kay" away to Canada.

reply

That doesn't make sense to me. If what you say is true, then why didn't he just kill "Kay"? He wouldn't have to hire "some unknown prostitute" and make it more complicated.

(suspect): -Depends, are you terrified?

What is so stupid about this movie is the ruse of the "other woman", the victim, being considered by the police to be Spacey ' s wife. Don't they perform autopsies and DNA checks on victims of violent crime???? I'm assuming that in the movie, the police are led to believe the entire time that it's Stacey ' s wife....he cries and tells them it's his wife. But, how did the police and examiner not eventually figure out that the victim was a completely differentb woman? It's a huge, ridiculous plot hole. Dumb.

In 1992 (when this movie was made) DNA testing was in its infancy, and was not widely used for forensic identifications. In this case, it was not required anyway, as the woman's husband and doctor both identified her dead body.
