I never understood why....

Pedro and Tita didn't just run away together. If they loved eachother so much how could Pedro marry Tita's sister and have a child with her? I guess them running away to be together wouldn't have made a very good book/movie.

I wondered that, too. Why didn't Romeo and Juliet just take off? I guess there wouldn't be much of a story if they did. But yeah, the whole plot does strain disbelief. Pedro seemed like a dependent fool, and Tita, I guess, felt bound by her duty to her mom. But yeah, they're both kinda well, dumb characters imho.

Family is extremely important in Mexican culture, to turn your back on a family member in need is akin to eternal damnation. It's not as easy as it would be in Western culture to run away and elope-- your family is your everything, as shown in the movie. For Tita to have run way from her family would have been a very traumatic event for her, but particularly so because her abuse caused her to develop an unhealthy dependency on her mother.

Abuse is a horrific cycle that intrinsically ties the abused to the abuser. The abused self-esteem is so rotted that they feel no one will love them-- for them it's better to be loved by the abuser than by no one at all.

The complications of the above two are what, I think, rooted Tita to their home.

THANK YOU! Family is most certainly why Tita and Pedro didn't just run away together. Not only would they never have done it, the thought probably would have hever entered their minds. They just didn't think that way.

But only when you are with a doctor or someone has burnt your bathroom.

The director agrees with you hunnybunny. He called Pedro an imbecile and said the only way he could justify the lead being in love with Pedro is if he were gorgeous. Which the actor that played him is.

For you Spanish speakers it's at (8:25): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuV2wSdeGjg where Alfonso Arau says this.

In case you're wondering, I'm female.
