Only 5.9?

Not that it's such a terrible rating, but it definitely deserves more.

Anyone agrees?

Agreed. It's just that newer films get ridiculously overrated.

I'm going to India soon and am watching every Indian movie I can find. I loved City of Joy. It shows the good, the bad, the ugly, and the amazing in the people and in the place.

I voted and gave this film a 9.

Perhaps Westerners are just too jaded. Perhaps they prefer to have their heroes wear a cape and hood (the Dark Knight, see the top 200), or perhaps they prefer to side with the tyrannical antagonist (the Godfather, same list) since they see resistance as futile. In either case, it relieves them of the burden of acknowledging that real heroes are ordinary peole who sacrifice themselves for a greater good. Now they can sit in their recliners and watch the world go by. Entertainment does not lead to effort, whereas inspiration does.

I agree 5.9 (now up to 6!) seems low. The age/gender breakdown shows that younger males rated this lowest. Don't know that they're compassionate enough yet to appreciate this type of film (give 'em more Batman and Rambo). I was enthralled with the Indian people, families, scenery and conflicts (poverty, mafia, leprosy, etc.).

I haven't seen this movie in a while but it's one of the better ones I've seen and it left a strong impression on me. I gave it a 10. Maybe people just don't want to watch a movie about the very poor.

This is only the first layer. Don't you wanna see how deep I go? -Winifred

I gave a 10 too. Western audience rate achievement highly. Eastern themes are more based of the fact that REAL HAPPINESS COMES ONLY AFTER OVERCOMING PAIN AND MAKING SACRIFICE.

reply

Yeah, I agree.

A 9.

It's up to 6.4 now, but still a rather low rating. It should be at least a 7 I think.
