This is a true story - check out Lifetimetv.com and search for this movie, this is what you'll get:

CHILD OF RAGE
Director: Larry Peerce
Year film was made: 1992
Genre: Drama
Stars: Mel Harris, Dwight Schultz

"This is a true story about seven-year-old Catherine, who was adopted with her brother by a loving couple. Over time, her strange behavior, short temper and frequent mood swings alert her parents to a deep-rooted history of abuse."

I wonder if we can find out what happened to her - I'll do some research.

"Cat" is not real.

The girl that this movie was based off of is named Beth Thomas.

There is a film called the "Documentary of Child of Rage," with some actual footage of Cat as a older child. She was progressing with the help of her family and network. She must be a woman now and I pray she has been able to totally heal from the horrible things she had to endure.

Just checked out this link http://www.attachment.org/Seminars.htm she is a registered nurse and doing seminars now. Sounds like her life has come together and now she is trying to help others.

reply

Wasn't her real name Beth Thomas...?

reply

I actually saw Beth speak recently at a conference. She has a wonderful story to tell. She is a registered nurse and assists other families and children that are affected by Reactive Attachment Disorder(RAD). She is a beautiful woman and appears to have overcome her obstacles from her past. Her mother is Nancy Thomas and she speaks frequently throughout the country about RAD children. Make sure to go see her, she is the BEST!

Was this movie aggerating the actions of a child of rage or is it really like this for real for victims?

reply

It is very real and happens all the time. Just some kids don't get that bad, but they do get split personalities and never have a normal life and abuse drugs and etc....... child of rage is true and can happen to a child. I'm glad they made the movie.

That's great, spit at the fat kid- Vern in STAND BY ME.

reply

I think it may happen mostly to kids who were abused mentally, physically, or sexually, or abandoned by one or both parents. I think?

reply

This was a unique situation. Some children do act out, some are unable to feel love, and some do express anger in unorthodox manners, but most victims aren't murderers in the making. Many men (and even some women) who abuse children were the victims of abuse themselves, but again, it's not a huge percentage, nor is it normal.

I'm sure this was a movie depicting a real life scenario of one person, but no, it's not like this for all victims, and I'm not just speaking for myself.

reply

Nancy Thomas is her mom? So she got adopted again by someone else? What happened to Tim and Julie, the couple who first adopted Beth and John? The ones in the documentary.

It is so amazing, when I saw that documentry on youtube when she was a kid, the way she was so calm and not ashame of what she says or even regret. I thought I was watching a documentry of Michael Myer documentry, like this is what a serial killer looks like at a young age and lord knows what she will become when she is older. Though I saw the ending and I see her crying when she talks about all the things she did in the past. Then you no longer think that all damaged kids are damaged goods, they can be saved.

Like that movie that had similar storylines "For the Love of a Child" about two women who worked hard to saving children from terrible homes, it mostly focused on a little boy who was abused terrible by his father and I think his mother. He is rescued but grew up and was healed and all that.

We just finished watching this movie in my AP Psychology class and we also watched an interview with the real girl, Beth, that she did when she was about 6/7.

Here's some info that my teacher told us: The movie was based on Beth's real life but it was actually downplayed from the even in her life. Beth was sent to live in a place for troubled kids where she learned to feel emotions. The treatment worked well for her. Her story was published in a book (sorry, I forgot what it's called) and now she's a pediactric nurse in Colorado.

Ps. Eric's real name is John/Jonathan.

We just watched a short video interview about Beth today in my Problems of Childhood class. I couldn't handle watching her being interviewed and had to leave the room. I wasn't disgusted by it, I was just upset for her and it was just disturbing to watch. What this girl went through was horrible and I am really glad her life has turned out for the best!

One of my classmates wondered what happened to her brother, does anyone know?

reply

Here's the title of the book based on Beth's life Dandelion on My Pillow, Butcher Knife Beneath.

reply

What she went through just broke my heart. I'm so glad she is doing well now.
