It's a good question and I am glad the man is now reviled. He spit on a great artist and America did nothing to stop it.

He wasn't unlike everyone else playing to the times

He was a public employee

Could have been fired at any time

But he was good at his job, and could keep a secret like no-one else

Having files on anyone and everyone helped, too. I'd love to see how many tax dollars were spent spying on non-criminals and non-Communists.
