Worst British Film of all time

Hated so much by the cast, crew and fans, "Columbus" wasn't even released in the main collection of DVD editions. Omitted from boxsets and only briefly referred to in books, it is a pustule on the face of an otherwise wonderful legacy of British film.

Most Carry On fans flatly have no time for it. Barbara Windsor refused to have anything to do with it. Jim Dale, Jack Douglas, Leslie Phillips and June Whitfield have all admitted that they only did the film out of loyalty to Gerald Thomas and Peter Rogers.

An unmitigated fiasco. At least "Emmannuelle" and "England" were of their time; when the 70s were just really tacky! There is no excuse in 1992 for the same crap.

Well its pretty awful ... but worse of all belongs to a dud called Truly Madly Deeply. Well thats what I think.

Isn't this the same movie that starred Sandra Bullock? Who was voted in a poll as one of the WORST actresses ever!!! Also known as "miss boxoffice poison".

reply

No, it isn't even the worst Carry On film.

The film version of Whoops Apocalypse was one of the worst British films I've seen.

...or She'll Be wearing Pink Pajamas, Bloodbath at the House of Death or any of the ouvre of Robbie Moffat.

As for not being included in the Carry On collections, that's simply because it belongs to a different company rather than shame. Studio Canal own the Anglo-Amalgamated Carry Ons, Granada Ventures own the Rank and Hemdale ones while this was an independent picture.

Not that it's very good, but it ain't close to being as bad as Carry On England, which was wildly outdated even when it came out.

actually after the second third viewing its not too bad if you stop looking for things to hate about it. Some of the performers come out of it really well, who'd have thought Alexi Sayle and Julian Clary would shine through, and Jim Dale has lost none of his charm. The script is pretty good also...from Carry On veteran Dave Freeman, lags a little in the third quarter but still some nice lines.

The only down side for me these days on viewing it is seeing Chris "charged with possessing kiddy porn" Langham in a role.

It will prove to be a fascinating little film as the years roll by, seeing all these familiar faces in one film..some great tv character actors you dont normally see in the movies. Who says the cast and all involved hate it??? of course its not in any of the boxsets because a different company owns the rights.

I disagree about Julian Clary, he was one of the worst characters. If only he played more of a Charles Hawtrey role, a letcherous rascal pinching bottoms of young ladies, now that would've been a hoot. Instead he was a bore without any carry-on type eccenticisms to work with his camp image.

Its awful but carry on emanuelle is ten times worse

Admittedly it wasn't good. Some of the scenes with the native Americans were worth a smirk. I can't say that about the rest of the film.

Well, if 'Carry On...'' films are considered a major highpoint in British film, as they are by some, then that doesn't really speak highly of British films. I like many (not all) of these films, but I don't think these mostly unintelligent farces should really define the films of the UK. The reason you can mostly like CO films is because of the (disgracefully treated) stars who made bad scripts, bad puns and crude humour work.

Actually I think 'Columbus' was at least better than ''England'' but they were all awful... as was 'Carry On Dick''.

absolutely not the worst film ever made. Not even the worst Carry On film ever made. certainly a great deal better than 'England' or 'Emanuelle' both of which were dire.
