One Thing I Just Don't & Probably Will Never Understand.

I'm talking about the ending of this movie. After Helen was being laid to rest, you see Anne-Marie & Jake & the rest of the community that Candyman terrorized show up at the funeral. Anne-Marie has a angry hateful look on her face when she stares at Helen in her coffin & then Jake throws the hook down into her coffin. Then of course we pretty much know that Helen would come back as the new Candyman. It wasn't a surprise when she did & killed Trevor at the end.

But what I want to know is WHY?! Why would Anne-Marie visit that evil upon poor Helen of all people? The woman who risked her life to fight Daniel/Candyman & who died saving Anne-Marie's baby in the process? Why in heavens name did she bear hatred towards Helen of all people to knowingly condemn her to a fate worse than death? I'm surprised at Jake too for that matter. Unless there's something I'm mistaken about but I don't think I am.

For all these years, that scene always bothered me about this movie because it just didn't make any sense. Talk about hating the wrong person. In a way I'm glad that Candyman killed a lot of those people, if that's who they were, then they deserved it.

I think it really depends on how you view that scene. I am sure many other people saw it the same way as you did, and many others saw it differently.

I remember way back when this first premiered in theaters the director had said in an interview that the scene was not about them condemning her to be the new Candyman but were in fact giving her the hook as their way of thanking her for destroying him. Kind of like the way some tribes and Native Americans buried their dead with the bones, teeth, etc of their kills.

Anyway, knowing this, if you choose to watch that scene again you'll probably see it in a different light and see that Anne-Marie didn't have a look of hatred but one of sadness.

Hope this helps! Cheers! :)

I've always thought it was because, after the Anthony abduction which everyone thought was her doing, that they were blaming her for the previous deaths too. I figured this was their way of eradicating all physical evidence of her mis-deeds.

If rich white lady Helen hadn't come poking around then her dog wouldn't have been killed and baby Anthony wouldn't have been taken in the first place.

Ignoring the two previous deaths that occurred in the area before she turned up, I see... There is a narrative you need to push, after all.

After seeing this topic, I wanted to express how I felt watching this movie for the first time in several years. I hated that ending. I also just didn't like the movie in general. The Candy Man has this tragic backstory of wrongfully getting killed by bigots and instead of trying to get back at those kind of people, he preys on innocent people.

That just wrong! I also hated Anne becoming the Candyman at the end and killing her ex husband. I don't condone cheating but it's not a crime worthy of death. This whole movie was just too dark, disturbing, and nonsensical to me.
