Just 6.5?

Has to be 7.5+. It's creepy, suspenseful, has a great villain who is not overused. Great performances by Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen. Superb direction as well. So underrated.

I gave it a 9, I thought it was excellent.

I agree 100%. I think this must not have enough instant gratification for most people.

It is weird to think of this film as having a rating of less than 7.0.

90s horror in general was... underwhelming to say the least. But this is by far one of the best!

6,5 for something as thorougly cheesy and kind of dumb'ish must mean there's a number of much overenthusiastic people out there. Virginia Madsen manages to be more or less adequate, and she's by all means easy to look at, but that big black dude must surely go down as one of the silliest, most unintentionally amusing boogiemen in film history, whispering crappy lines with his deep voice ("BE my victim!"). The director of this thing, Bernard Rose, had earlier made Paperhouse, a rather quietly effective chiller that was actually spooky in places (and, unlike Candyman, had atmosphere to spare), but here he's landed firmly on the generic slasher territory.

So you only like Madsen's body, and have issues with "big black dudes"? He was an urban legend ghost, what's he supposed to do yell and scream "I'll kill you MF"? He was a sophisticated artist during slave times, I personally liked the back story with murder, love, and revenge. The urban Chicago setting was a relief from the usual haunted house or forest.

Paperhouse was sh!t.

I gave it 7. Will watch it again soon. Love the atmosphere throughout the movie.

It's free on Crackle right now. Good quality too.

Totally agree. In fact 7.5 would be low. Early 90's classic.

I know it's high I was expecting under a 5. This film absloutley stank. No wonder youtube won't store it. It was terrible, it just didn't tick any boxes you need to tick.

The best thing was maybe the actor who played the candyman, but he was used sparingly so that was a mistake. The plot was terrible and there must have been loads of plot holes that I can't be bothered to go through.

I gave it a 4 and thats generous.
