More Tragedy than Horror *POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

I love this film and recently rewatched it.

Although yes, this movie is a HORROR film, gory, violent, suspenseful... so by no means am I diminishing that aspect of it, I feel the tragic side of this tale is far more overwhelming .. at least to me.

The first time I watched it in the theatres (I was a teen), I couldn't help but feel sad for the lovely Helen. Her once promising life turned upside down and ruined. Her only ally, her husband, ultimately betrays her. There was no where for her to go in life other than jail or a coffin and Madsen's performance in this is criminally under-rated.

Again, I rewatched this and despite the bloodshed, the horror, the fear, ... it saddened me to no end at the fate of poor, poor Helen. Hands down, one of the most tragic figures in a horror film.

The ending where Helen saves the baby still brings tears to my eyes.

Yes, very emotional and the music doesn't help... at .... all.

100% agree with this.

"What you don't like rice? Tell me Michael, how can a billion Chinese people be wrong?"

Not to mention the tragedy that happened to the villain himself. I guess Candyman wanted Helen to live an equally tragic life before she had an equally sufferable death so she could be with him forever.

I think he wanted his family back--I can't think of another legitimate reason for him to lie to Helen and trying to kill the baby, except he saw the baby as the child he might have had with his lover during their lifetime. He is even caring for the child, albeit in a gruesome manner--yummy blood instead of milk.

However, I really think that the film could be viewed as Helen losing her mind and killing these people in a dissociative state. No one ever dies when she seems really with it.

I totally agree
