I found that kind of odd too, that they didn't hear the baby or Helen's cries.
I get that they were shouting sometimes but still.....Jake hears Helen moving around in there from ACROSS THE COURTYARD!
That scene bugs me a little also. How did Jake know it was Candyman himself in the pyre?!
It could have been anyone at all rooting around in there.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.

What messed it up was Helen was using that longshoreman's hook to move stuff around in the pile and Jake mistook the hook (hehe) for Candyman. But still, I wish it would have ended different.
