Why are all of the slayers girls?

The fateful line of 'chosen ones' brings more complications by always attaching itself to girls. Boys would be more equipped to quickly overtake and stab vampires, especially since they have stronger inclinations to be athletic. Girls have more fluctuations that can stifle the required sort of fighting in this movie than boys do. Also, there would be no underlying sexual tension for the king of the vampires to use against the slayer if the kid were male.

Its a metaphor of patriarchy apparently. It gets explained in the last few episodes of season 7

Thank you, Crocodile. This might point to a hidden insecurity in a king of the vampires, which would explain Lothos' bravado.

not really---men can't menstruate.....women can. Ergo women are the chosen one.

Whedon's inspiration was the concept of the pretty blonde victim in most horror films becoming the weapon instead.
