Better than the series

This movie was sooooo much better than the series. I hate how people say the series was better, the original is always better. Luke, Kristy, David, Paul and Donald were all great in it. Oh and I can't forget about Hillary Swank and Ben Affleck.

i thought the movie sucked and am suprised that such an awesome show came out of this horrible train wreck

Okay, my personal $.02. MurderedKurt said "the original is always better." Hmm...usually, I'd have to agree, but not in this case. I guess if you prefer out-and-out comedies to comedy/dramas, I can see how a person might prefer the movie to the series. However, the movie was played out just to be a cheesy teen comedy, which was *not* what Joss intended. His original script called for the same dark comedy/drama/horror that the series blended together. But the higher-ups decided they would do better to make a full-out comedy/horror. They were wrong. The movie *bombed* in the theaters, which ended up being a blessing in disguise for Joss, allowing him to eventually write another version of Buffy, this time closer to his original material. And the show was born.

Now, as for my personal opinion...I love both. When I was fairly young, I was visiting family, and I picked up this book called "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: the novelization." I was intrigued, so I started reading. I fell in love with the book, and decided I *had* to see the movie. I rented it, fell in love with it, and later bought it. Years later, I'm watching the WB, and I see commercials advertising this new show: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." I was *really* excited about it!! From the first episode, I *loved* the show, even though it was so different from the movie. Now, I will admit, the show did have points and episodes I didn't like as much. (Bad Eggs...x_X). And I have to admit, I did stop watching during season 4, and didn't return to my love of Buffy until *after* the show was cancelled. But I have all the seasons that are out in the US. And I still love the show. I consider it one of my favorites. My problem with the movie has to do with the ending. The ending is kind of a mess, with random cuts. Example: we see Buffy spray the hairspray into the fiery cross, lighting Lothos on fire. The very next instant, she's running up the stairs. There's no transition from one scene to the next there, and I have always wondered what was originally between the two parts. Also, the final fight between Lothos and Buffy, leading to Lothos's death is choppy and not very well-done at all. Lothos has random lines in there, that with a tighter plot, could have been relevant, but as they stand now, they make Rutger Hauer look like an amateur actor.

Spreaking of acting...Kristy Swanson did do a good job as Buffy in the movie. However, she didn't bring the range of emotions to the character, like Sarah Michelle Gellar did. But I think that's understandable, since Kristy's Buffy didn't go through *nearly* as much as SMG's Buffy did. After all, as someone else pointed out, the show had 144 hours for plot and character development, while the movie had only 1 1/2 hours. The rest of the movie cast wasn't terribly horrible. I liked Donald Sutherland as Merrick, and I can't compare him to Anthony Stewart Head's Giles, because they are two distinctly different characters. I do think the show's cast *was* better, acting-wise (Alyson Hannigan and James Marsters being the best actress and actor on the show, in my opinion.) But I think at least part of the reason the show can be seen as having more talent is because we see emotional ranges of the characters in the show, emotional ranges the movie just does not have the luxory to show. For instance, all of Buffy's cheerleader friends from the movie are all ditzy, shallow, rich girls who don't really seem to have a thought in their heads or a care in the world. The show had two characters who started out that way: Cordelia and Harmony. Charisma Carpenter's season one Cordelia seemed like the stereotypical snobby head cheerleader, while Mercedes McNab's Harmony seemed like a ditzy, shallow follower. Thanks to the arcs of the show, both characters were allowed to grow and change. Cordelia grew into a strong and very capable woman who actually cared about the world around her. Harmony grew into a still ditzy, but villainous vampire who kept going back and forth from good to evil. Now, my point to this is that if the movie had had more time, we probably would have seen at least one or two of Buffy's old friends turn into stronger characters, instead of the stereotypes they were shown as in the film.

Okay...that was a *LOT* longer than I thought it would be. o_O Cheers!

What a filthy job!
Could be worse.
How?

I wholeheartedly agree. I saw it when it first came out and have been a fan since. I was extremly excited when the show first started but when I watched the pilot I didn't like it.

So yeah I prefer the movie, the cast was much better and the movie was more enjoyable.

I have read the original script for the film, and I recently watched the movie, and after also viewing the first five episodes of the TV show, I can say that the movie does suck. The jokes were simply not funny, and I think the movie would have been better off had the director (and Donald Sutherland, apparently)stuck to the original Joss Whedon script, which I found mildly entertaining.

reply

I agree the series really is pathetic. Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry really make it so hot. The series was just like all the other teenie-bopper shows of its day like the gilmore girls, charmed, angel, felicity.

I have to say, that I think what some of you are saying is completely rediculous. I am only 18, but I would have to think I know a lot more than some of you because you say Sarah Michelle Geller cannot act, or just barely act, is wrong, Now I don't think she is a great Actress but she isn't bad. I liked the movie, when I was younger, but after I saw the series, which I didn't start watching until the 6th season because I didn't get the WB until then :(, I find that this movie seems really cheesy, because they didn't put into it what was put into the series. The Series has a great cast, as does the movie. I prefer Sarah Michelle Geller, over Kristy Swanson, as Buffy Summers, but both were great. I am not a big fan of either, but I completely love the series, and so doesn't my 21 year old sister. This show is for people who like Sci-fi type shows with a realistic twist to it, and that is what the show did. Buffy was a great show, the movie was good, but cheesy. I think saying that the movie is better than the series, then you most likely saw one of the earlier episodes, one of which wasn't that good, it is like all series, has an occasional bad episode but whatever, I just had to say something after reading this. ok bye

Sarah Michelle Geller is a great actress as far as I'm concerned, because she took something which wasn't supposed to be taken seriously in the first place and did a helluva job making it believable. And she delivered her lines like a pro. The fight scenes were good (they got better as the show went on) and the chemistry between her and the other castmates was awesome. BTVS is not like all the other teen shows on TV. First of all, nobody on the show was a teen, except for Dawn anyway.

There were times when I watched the TV show that I actually cried, because SMG was so convincing. Like the time she found her mother dead. Anyway, there's no way that show could have lasted for 6 seasons and had legions of fans if nobody liked it. I admit, I was skeptical myself, but once I started watching it, I got hooked just like everybody else, and now that it's not on anymore, I miss it like hell.

Buffy and Angel both were two of the best TV series' that have been on TV in a long time. The writing and the acting were top notch on both shows. The whole cast was good on both. And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, Joss turned around and made a MUSICAL episode! I admit, the singing wasn't the best on all points, but the songs were good and the episode itself was a great idea. At least it wasn't the same old tired crap that's on TV week after week. It took a risk and the risk paid off. The musical episode is one of my favorite episodes ever, next to "Hush", the one where the demons took everybody's voices away so nobody could scream. That's my favorite Buffy episode of all time.

Yeah, Buffy the series is so cool, mannn, like, they had a frat house with an underground military facility, so original mannn, and, like, Buffy and friends love to crack jokes while people are getting killed around them, mannn, cool, and like, cops almost never show up even if multiple murders occur, and their school keeps running the next day after monsters run riot the night before, killing students and security guards...

Any college film professor who looks for deeper meaning in a TV show (as mentioned by someone earlier in this thread) with such shoddy script-writing needs to get out more.

Stop saying "like" and "man" you hippie. If you knew anything about the series you'd know that the police chief and others are part of a conspiracy to cover up all the monsters.

Oh? I guess I don't spend enough time chatting to random people on the internet to know that.

Anyone who thinks the movie is better than the series has probably not seen the series.
SMG is not a great actor, but she is quite good. Season Six proves by point.
Comparing Buffy (or ANGEL for that matter) to Dawsons Creek or Gilmore Girls is ridiculous! Obviously you haven't seen the show...

No doubt the quality of the writing did vary (Bad Egg, Beer Bad, etc) but overall, it was a good show. (Angel was even better!)

reply

They're both good but the series is much better than the movie. The movie is more of a comedy while the TV show is more on the dark side. Don't get me wrong, I like both the movie & the series but the series is much better.

reply

Comparing Buffy the film and Buffy the series is apples & oranges. I am a ravenous devotee of the series but enjoy the film for what it is....early 90's valley-90210-schtick.

And tell me again where Kristy Swanson is??? Last I heard she had a Dui and well...that was last I heard.

SMG....bad actress??? Have you watched The Body? OMWF? Anne? Hello..???

reply

Unfortuntely, Kristy Swanson hasn't really been in a lot of movies since Buffy &, IMO, many people have never heard of Kristy Swanson. The most recent move that I saw Kristy in was Dude, Where's My Car? several years ago & I just watched the Buffy movie several weeks ago on DVD.

I saw Kristy Swanson in Mannequin: On The Move, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The Chase & Dude, Where's My Car?. She is a good actress but she seems to be stuck in lower budget movies.

Just because Kristy Swanson hasn't been in anything lately (that you've seen or know about) doesn't mean she's not a good actress. It just means that Hollywood is very fickle. One minute they love you and the next they are like "Kristy who???".

Excellent point. Hollywood is very fickle & as soon as they think that you aren't good enough, they give you the boot.

One minute Hollywood will love & then the next, they might not like you.

This is why Indepedent films are taking off like because the indie's aren't as bad as the Hollywood exec's.

"the movie seemed like there was so much more to it ,obviously leading to the series, and this gave the film a bit more depth than it seemed on the surface, the very fact the film came first ,setting the whole buffy ball rolling should mean it's people's first choice."

Uh, buddy... that's just not how it happened. Someone didn't say, "Hey, this movie was pretty cool. Let's turn it into a series!". Nope. Joss Whedon(you know, the guy who wrote the movie?) hated the way the movie turned out and turned the great idea he had into a wonderful television show that has more than likely wiped the memory of the movie out of most people's heads.

for me the series was great . i remember when this movie came out . even back then it was just fun to watch but i didnt take it serious .

reply

First off i think Swanson was and still is better looking than Sarah Ms. Anorexia Gellar. Also i heard that Swanson perfromed half of the stunts herself in the movie(some of which were pretty impressive like that spin kick she nailed on the villain to get the stake in). i think she even did some martial arts. Also i liked the movie because it was simple, the series was basically trying to combine the movie with 90210, I for one am sick of that complely inaccurate teenage drama crap and am surprised shows like the OC are still watched

But i guess its cuz im really more of an action fan, which explains why i like Swanson.

reply

The show was NOTHING like 90210. And just for the record doing a spin kick does not count as a stunt. Of course Kristy did most of her stunts, the fights were very simple and could be done by just about anyone. The fights on the show, however, required real stunt coordinators and stunt doubles. They were much more complicated.

Sarah Michelle Gellar did her own stunts on the series. Yes, she had a stunt double, but Joss himself has said she has one of the most convincing high kicks he's ever seen. Sarah said in a recent interview that she had numerous broken and fractured bones from the stunts she did and she also had to wear pants through most of the seventh season to cover all the bruises she acquired. The movie is nowhere near the brilliance of the series (and if you haven't seen more than one season of the series, please don't comment - and season one doesn't count). Joss realized the movie wasn't good, why do you think the series was made to begin with? I, for one, am glad that the movie tanked, because we never would have gotten 144 fabulous episodes or 110 wonderful episodes of "Angel." We also may never have been introduced to the wonderful acting talents of James Marsters, Alyson Hannigan, and (yes) Sarah Michelle Gellar - among many, many others!
