I am a total newcomer to NIN having just been introduced to this stuff through a young man was asked to care for on a temporary basis. I'm familiar with MM who he likes a lot, but when he told me about this video and how much he wants to see it I decided to look it up. The young man is 16 and no longer in my care.

Can anyone please explain to me what this Broken film is about, I mean I have read about the content, I've seen Scrapbook and I consider myself reasonably open minded, willing to watch most films, but please can anyone explain to me the attraction of this film.
I understand a man is tortured?
Is the film some kind of guinea pig type thing...I mean is it just see how sick a film can be or is there some kind of aim to the content?
I am generally willing to look at disturbing material if I can see a motive or message to the content.
Is this film just pure nasty torture or is there some deeper theme?

Grateful for advice/information.

Ok here's the 411, Trent Reznor originally made it with a two-fold intention, one to promote himself, two it was supposed to be a commentarry on how we hold up serial killers in such high regard etc etc. However after an inquisition by the FBI who thought it was a snuff film Reznor decided to never release it.

Is it the most graphic thing i've ever seen...no (I'm an 18 year old girl) Is it something I would watch with my little sister or someone who wouldnt see it for what it was... no

If you are a NIN fan, its a must see.

This is untrue.
This is what Trent says: http://www.nin.com/access/5_07_04/index.php

If you have a source for the FBI quote, please share :)

Broken is Trent Reznor and Peter Christopherson's visual translation of the themes of the record 'Broken EP'. (http://www.nin.com/halo/05/index.html)
At the time of the film’s creation Nine Inch Nails were changing dramatically, from a dark synth pop band to a more brutal industrial metal sound.
I personally recommend buying the EP first, you may find it quite difficult to grasp, depending on how open you are to alt music, but believe me if there's one thing I know, it's that NIN can become an addiction!
Anyway this film has no script, so all of the motifs come from the music videos and the torturing of the unfortunate person, it’s visual and musical.
The basic theme of this film is violence. Does it have a meaning? Yes. The Broken EP is all about the weird little things that make us tick, sex, hunger, violence, the animalistic nature. (The Downward Spiral (http://www.nin.com/halo/08/index.html) takes this one step further) The movie pretty much visualizes this.
This is a compilation video of videos for songs from Broken EP; one of the songs called 'Happiness in Slavery' probably gives the best insight into the movie. Trent sings (screams) about finding pleasure in pain, that the horrors can almost become beautiful! The video for Happiness in Slavery features BDSM fanatic Bob Flanagan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Flanagan) being strapped to a chair tortured and killed by a machine. It’s all really down to you to decide whether it’s art or gore fest.
To be honest I think the movie is a bit tongue in cheek, it's gained mythological status in the underground culture so many people just download it to see what all the fuss is about.
As for whether or not this 16 year old should watch it I have no idea. What’s 16 anyway? It’s really up to you I guess, but if you’re willing to watch this then go for it. Hope this helps a bit.

a p2p network or ebay is probably your best bet. I got this on VHS several years ago and hardly ever watch it. It really isn't anything special. All of the music videos can be found on the Closure video, so that there's pretty much a large majority of it. If I remember correctly, the help me i'm in hell video on the movie is actually a blank screen, while the version on closure is an actual video. The video for gave up really isn't a video at all, I think it starts off a sort of like a video, then screens back to the finale with the man and his pyschotic kidnapper. As for the stuff inbetween, it's just a few seconds of torture before the video starts. A man is being tortured in a living room with a TV in the room that shows the videos. Like I said, besides the videos, the stuff inbetween only amounts to a couple of minutes, while disturbing, it really isn't anything to go nuts over. Closure is done in a similar but more interesting fashion. I would recommend Closure over this.

It's an okay video. I have a copy. Gore-wise, it is pretty tame compared to most movies aimed at grossing you out. If you want to see it, email me. Ohbrazil @ gmail . com

I found it interesting...but more disturbing. I am a huge fan on Nine Inch Nails, but the whole thing freaked me out a little bit.

Broken was interesting. It definitely wasn't unbearable, but it certainly was disturbing. I findd out about these kind of things through wikipedia. one link leads to another. go to youtube.com and search nine inch nails broken. it's the first thing that comes up.

There was actually a fan-made "remaster" done a little while ago, which sharpened up the picture of the videos a bit and got rid of that horrible "bootleg" sound and gave it menus and stuff too. If you have a membership at Demonoid, you can find the torrent @ http://www.demonoid.com/torrents/details/187368/ but if you don't its not that hard to find on any torrent site. I would recommend giving it a watch (but then again Im a big fan of NIN).

If anyone wants an invite to demonoid, email me @ [email protected] I downloaded the mentioned remaster, and it is quite well done.

reply

OK, thanks for inviting me, this video looks alot different when its in this kind of quality, the movie is great, but not the greatest if you have a weak stomach. I hope everyone can see what this video is actually about instead of just thinking its a fake snuff film.

When I was younger and I first heard about the film, I was searching everywhere (this was before Ebay), and I could never find it. I read about it online and was truly apalled, but as I've grown older I've become desensitized to this sort of thing. 1. Closure's still a better buy. 2. It's not as bad as recent shock films like Saw and Hostel...but I will give him credit for reintroducing the exploitation film to a younger and more unsuspecting audience. 3. It's only 18 minutes long. All in all, I wasn't that impressed after all the hype I read online.

The quality isn't incredible but it does what it is supposed to do.

I expected something a lot worse then that after everything I have read about it.
