Wasn’t Van Helsing the priest in the opening scene

Or did Anthony Hopkins have a double role?

reply

Hopkins definitely played both roles because I believe that the Van Helsing character is suppose to be a distant relative of the Bishop who swore to capture and depose the Prince ever since he renounced Christ and chose Darkness. I haven't read Stoker's novel in years and have read various offshoots and fan fiction so my memory is bungled.

I have an audiobook of Stoker's Dracula and I assume it was an unabridged version cause it was a large 500 page book. Anyway, although at the beginning Dracula boasts to Jonathan about his family having fought the Turks and others, as well as mentioning he's related to Atilla the Hun, he doesn't say anything about why he became a vampire. The whole thing of his wife getting killed is made up for this movie.

He played three roles. Those two plus the narrator.

reply

Four roles if we’re splitting hairs here, he also played one of Dracula’s wives.

That was Van Helsing moonlighting as a priest or bishop in the beginning. We learned in the 2004 movie Van Helsing, that he is in fact close to 400 years old
