WTF were those metal things on Tom Waits' hands?


Title is self- explanatory. I always wondered. On a side not, awesome performance. Wish we'd seen more of him.

Some old medical device, for arthritis or perhaps finger conditioning for piano players. I saw a reprint of an old engraving and the exact thing was pictured.

That would make sense. I was wondering how, even at the time it was set, those things could possibly be seen as conductive to good mental health.

Have you ever noticed when this movie is shown on TV on a channel that has commercials (Not HBO or something) that they always cut out the Renfield parts? He is never shown in it at all. Lol kind of funny

They're "guards" to cover his fingernails so he can't scratch himself\others.
