5.3?????

shareYou've been here awhile so you know the drill. Any movie with a predominantly black cast gets ranked lower by the white trolls without screening the film.
shareThe movie has its moments, but I don't really object to a 5.3 rating. Somehow, 23 years on - I am far less impressed with the movie than I was when it premiered. I'm not sure if I can quite put my finger on it - one problem might be that Eddie Murphy isn't completely convincing in his role; his performance is kind-of stiff. And parts of the movie have this pretentious, fake, overly image-conscious vibe; and I'm not just saying this because most of the characters are upscale black people. And despite the glamor, something about the way the movie's main plot-line proceeds feels kind-of trite.
And before I'm accused of being another white racist (I've heard it all) - I'm actually black.
I do agree with MyDarkMeatofSteel that some black movies receive lower ratings than they otherwise might - and that "trolls" are a problem - but IMO, a 5.3 rating for this movie isn't that objectionable.
the film has AGED very well. we NEEDED to see that "glamour" and "poshness" that you believe is "pretentious." it's not perfect, but it has a great message, soundtrack and sharp and witty dialogue. that's your opinion, but i DON'T agree with you. i can NEVER get tired of this movie. if the rating was in the mid 6's, low 7's, then i would POSSIBLY cosign with you.

'MyDarkMeatofSteel' might have more credibility had he not been rating films such as White Chicks 10/10...
The rating is probably not a 'racial thing'. Hard to tell really but I don't believe there are enough racist, white trolls voting on this movie to push its rating down to sub-6. It's probably a reflection that some people don't 'get it'.
Personally, I think it's a fun movie. And on that basis, I rated it a 7/10.
right... it should be 7 at least. i love it. it's a bit too long, but it a great film!
