Tedious, nonsense and bad acting

A story about a skinny 12 yo boy who watches a home-made video of a pig being slaughtered then suddenly he loses his mind (???? WTF) and kills a girl (???? WTF) then he tells to his parents what he did, and the parents acts totally natural and help him to dispose the body (???? WTF) then as usual with this crappy movies it ends in nothing.

The script (nonsense) run for about 2 hours (tedious) with lame actors (bad acting)

At any rate, it´s better than Funny Games because at least it doesn´t have anyone on screen staring back at me, breaking the fourth wall, and mockingly lecture me. Otherwise, the polemic ain´t much different of course as he seems ´really´ obsessed with the influence of rampant make-believe violence; what´s somewhat surprising though is that he seems to have been in full control of the medium already back in 1992 - the pacing and rhythm are masterfully sustained throughout with his long, often static takes proving uncommonly effective. And the second half of the film is even somewhat unpredictable, focusing on Benny´s parents who, thanks to Mühe´s and Winkler´s fine performances, feel very authentic in their own confused search for a moral compass. It´s still kind of heavy handed and underdramatized, but overall a rather decent film. 6,5-7/10.

Completely disagree. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and I thought the acting (in particular Arno Frisch) was incredible.

I wonder... Are you one of those Americans that can't read subtitles, has never owned a passport and finds it impossible to relate to anything (or anyone) who isn't from the good ol' U S of A?

reply

...or, he just didn't like the movie.

I wonder...Are you of those Americans that only watches foreign films, owns a passport because he thinks it makes him special, and identifies himself with other cultures in an attempt to look sophisticated and cultured?

Just teasing. Being an American who has travelled extensively myself, I'll go out on a limb and say you're not American. You just get off on using the nationality as an insult to substitute for the word "stupid." How sad that you can't find it in yourself to be more original in your insults. The snobbish European with a distaste for American stupidity is such a cliche. I only met 100 of you in my travels.

He's right though in his observation that Americans tend to see "bad acting" in foreign movies (particularly European) when often those movies are actually brilliantly-acted, because they are unfamiliar with German/French/Italian/whatever patterns of behaviour. Europeans have different "tics" so to speak than Americans and if you've never been to Europe they may seem like bad acting to you. There are Americans who thought films like Caché (also Haneke) and The Lives of Others were badly acted and I mean, c'mon...

Do you really need to ask?

I have to love people saying that they love violent stuff and hate this movie. This film mocks you for your love of violence. The point of this, and Funny Games is that violence isn't entertaining.

Gotta love people hating a film without getting the obvious point to it.

Oh, and the parents certainly don't act like everything is normal, they struggle with it. But if your kid killed a girl what would you do? I'm not suggesting that everyone would do the same as in the movie, but it makes you think.

a skinny 12 yo boy
I see, you're prone to like films with average to obese people in it. ok.
then suddenly he loses his mind
There was nothing sudden about it. And the mind he has, has had throughout the entire film. I didn't see any change in his personality, sudden or otherwise.
the parents acts totally natural
Maybe compared to folks you've encountered but what I saw was a man and woman wanting to protect their child. They really weren't normal about anything though.
and help him to dispose the body
Nope! Daddy did it all on his own.
it ends in nothing.
He went to the police. Were you watching?
run for about 2 hours
Now I'm convinced we didn't watch the same film. Mine was about 1h45mins...

What you keep b!tching about has no grounds or even decent reasons. (the b!tching that made some sense anyway)

We've met before, haven't we?

reply

You've hit upon a good point here. Many of the folks who trash films on IMDb can barely explain the film.

As I've said before, you tend to like a film better if you truly pay attention to it and let the plot unfold.

Another good point from above - there were plot points throughout that DID unfold...

A script is usually measured in a page count rather than hours. And about your comment on the acting, is this opposed to lame actors (good acting) in this film?

I think Benny's Video should have contextualised Benny's reasoning for his obsession with death. Beyond committing murder, there was not enough characterisation as to Benny's reasoning. Instead Benny's Video moved onto the Parent's characterisations.
