On this week's WLM episode, the gang welcomes friend of the show, Jamelle Bouie back to the program to heap endless praise on one of the all-time greats, Batman Returns! Has Michelle Pfeiffer ever been better? Why did Batman have to 'scratch' the CD of the Penguin recording? How terrifying is that abandoned zoo? And has a family film ever embraced the threat of child murder more? PLUS: Oswald Cobblepot: the David Koresh of the Gotham sewer?

Cobblepot as David Koresh is an interesting take (I had a jr high teacher who seriously had us watch the waco siege as it happened lol)

I had always pictured Cobblepot as a cautionary take on what happened when parents threw away children with disabilities--he is physically deformed. The cobblepots are indeed wealthy but specifically because of his hands/nose, Oswald is considered a monster. When they realize they cannot 'hide' him any more and have no idea what else to do the parents then discard him into a sewer. Was it right no but it reflected the dilemma many parents of children with disabilities had without access to information, support, resources and networks which could have helped. And laws which provided education civil rights for people with disabilities so he could have grown up acting humane towards others.

The film was released two years after the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in America and was still super new.

Okay people STILL contest it. but back then this was also pre-internet where despite their wealth they cannot just readily look up stuff like now. Oswald was supposed to be born in like the 1940's/1950's
