John Goodman is Amazing

I've seen this movie several times and each time I see it I am more and more impressed with John Goodman's acting. I really think he should have won an Oscar for this role - he was fantastic !

The 'jerk' never said he was nominated, he said he should have won an Oscar for his role. Next.

And agreed, he should have won an Oscar. JG is tops.

Why should an actor be nominated for a leading role in a horrible film? the imbd rating is accurate 5.7. Why would anybody associated with this film be nominated for anything?

Goodman is a good actor and he does well here but his character as it is written and directed is a caricature of Babe Ruth which is why so many people hated the film or at least did not like it.

The story of George Herman Ruth is so interesting and so improbable it hardly needs embellishment. Horrible as a biography and a period piece. Babe Ruth saved baseball after the black sox scandal. the film is lame!

John Goodman is amazing in this film, amazingly fat.

If he was a such a great actor then why didn't he prepare for his role by looking like an athlete? Babe Ruth in his young years with the Redsox was not fat at all. He came to the sox at age 19 and left them at age 26. How is a 40 year old fat guy fit that picture? And never in his entire life did Babe Ruth look anything like Goodman.

If Robert Deniro can make himself look taut enough to pass for a great middleweight fighter in raging bull and then gain 50 lbs to be believable as a middle aged Jake Lamotta then Goodman could have lost at least enough weight to look remotely like Babe Ruth.

Anybody who thinks Goodman deserved any award must hate baseball because his swing and throwing motion are horrible. Anybody who played organized ball as a kid could be more believable.

Oscar? Oscar my arse.

Enough said lol.

@ sockscats: And I assume you are the very model of a "supermodel" body? Nice and thin, no fat, 6-pack on your stomach and all.

Regardless of film role, John Goodman is a great actor, and has more talent in his pinky-finger, than you have in your entire body.

reply

And you're totally missing the very valid point that sockscats makes. This isn't a judgment against fat people or a comment about body types at all, it's about John Goodmen weighing just under a metric ton in this movie when that isn't remotely an accurate depiction of the character he's playing. So it's ridiculous when people say he should have won an award, any award, when the man couldn't even be bothered to attempt to shape his body into something familiar to anyone that has ever seen pictures of Babe Ruth. It speaks to his commitment to the job he was expected to perform, and thus thoroughly ruins what could have been a very solid and respectable performance. He's absolutely ginormous in this movie and nowhere near the 225-250 pounds Babe Ruth weighed AT HIS HEAVIEST.

- You're wrong. Sorry to ruin the ending for you.

John Goodman is right handed playing a left handed baseball player. Thats explains his acting at home plate and the pitchers mound.

I'm left handed and cant do jack right handed except for bowling.

When saying somebody should have won an Oscar it goes without saying that they would have had to be nominated for one first.

reply

John Goodman should have at least been nominated for an Oscar and other awards, but then he is not in the "in crowd" that gets nominated year after year regardless of what they do or don't do. That is why I don't watch award shows anymore.

I agree. He can (and in some cases will) do anything. He is an amazing actor and person. I've seen him in many movies where he made the movie which sucked to begin with 100 times better.

He's also from St. Louis (whether New Orleans has anything to say about it or not) like me. AND he's still keeps up with Cardinals.

9 times out of 10 he gives the best performance in whatever he's in regardless of circumstances..

Your message is old, but I have to say that in my opinion you are 100% correct thatchbo! I love this movie so much that I own it, and I am amazed that John Goodman was not nominated for ANY awards. It was very demanding, and for those who criticize his weight I say, "Use your imagination!" If every actor that played another person had to be a clone, no bios would ever be made. However, from films I have seen of Babe Ruth he was pretty hefty too... maybe not quite as large as John Goodman, but I used my imagination and enjoyed the movie for the positive offerings. Mr. Goodman had all of the mannerisms down pat, including Babe's unique way of running. For those who criticize his behavior on the field, I am sure the director had input and did not rely on Goodman alone for his interpretation. In addition, the problem is the same with almost all of Hollywood's movies... they stretch the truth and sensationalize. If they didn't it probably wouldn't be a very interesting movie. I had to wonder if the real Babe was as exaggerated in character and habits though, and if not I would have preferred less of the gross parts. But Mr. Goodman made Babe tug at my heart for the poor, abandoned "child" he was.

An Oscar? Lol... Are you kidding me???

Cycling back and forth between affable buffoon and enraged drunkard doesn't take a lot of acting depth.

And this movie sucks.
