Designated Runner
I'm a Brit so please forgive my ignorance on the matter. Does baseball still have a 'designated runner' and if not, when did it exist? Personally, I think it's a terrible idea.

shareI believe that at the time baseball commissioner Landis made a special exemption for Babe Ruth. The normal rule is that once a player is replaced in a game for another player, even if it's just to run the bases, he can't come back into the game. Never read of it happening before then, or since.
A heart can be broken, but it still keeps a-beatin' just the same.
sounds like a good idea to me.

No. That thing was made up for the movie. No way in hell would baseball let a different player round the bases from 1st to home on a home-run. Even though Babe Ruth was no spring chicken at the end of his career, he could trot around the bases after hitting a home run.
