Did the dog really bite Jacob? I'm confused...

I don't get it, it appears that Mrs. Tetman's dog Peaches bit Jacob and he slashed the dog's face with a broken glass to defend himself. But later, the dog had no marks but Jacob's leg was all chewed up. Did the dog really bite Jacob or what that just some demon disguising as Mrs. Tetman and her dog when it bit him?
