Just finished my first viewing

This film wasn't bad, but it wasn't that good either. I didn't care for the ending. Everybody dies? Really? It was too close to Menace II Society's ending for me.
This was just one of the many gang-related movies to come out in the early to mid nineties.
I did not find the Mexican "Mafia" to be too convincing either. I do not doubt that they exist in real-life; however this movie did not get into too much detail of the organization or their criminal endeavors.
I give it a 5.5/10

At the start of the film, the main character's narriration confirms that movie is based on the Mexican Mafia.

I dont see why you guys are saying that the ending of American Me is close to the ending of Menace to Society when American Me was made first and is loosely based on a true story.

Here are the guys the movie was based on.

How did I convery ignorance for street culture at all?
If you read my original post, you'll see that I agknowledge the Mexican Mafia is real-I know the film is based on a true story, sort of.
I merely stated that the film focused on killing and not criminal activies such as gambling, drug dealing(it did touch on this at some points), racketeering...Things an actual MOB would do.
I also said the film was not BAD, I thought it was average, but I like Menace II Society more.

Wasn't the movie about Santana actually starting La Eme? Cause thats what I thought and obviously if you're just starting a gang you got to earn respect first (thats why they werent into all their criminal activities yet like right now)

Menace was released the same year

Just wanting to clarify that it was said earlier in the thread, Menace II Society was NOT released in the same year as this movie; it came a year later.

mawkyjones-

- The only signifigant characters that die toward the end are 'lil Puppet' and 'Santana'; And the reasons for their deaths are made clear in the last 30 minutes of the film. So, I just don't get your point on how, 'everyone dies'.

- The Mexican Mafia controlled the drugs and violence inside of prison, therefore, people outside of prison had to respect their title; Otherwise, one of them could wind up in prison, as people involved with drugs often do, and they wouldn't get protection.

God forbid, imagine you somehow wind up in prison. For the sake of argument, your from California. If your just some typical citizen, your in trouble. But, as akward as it sounds, if you are related to a drug dealer, and that drug dealer has made money for mexican drug dealers involved with a gang like EME, they will see to it that you don't get raped. This is no B.S. That's really how it works. However, if your drug dealing relative decided to screw over high ranking mexican drug dealers, your even worse off in prison than an average citizen; hense, the Italian mobsters son.

That WAS the racket, and the ORGANIZATION. And, that organization still exists in California prisons; which makes 'American Me' relevant to this very day. I take it you don't live in California, otherwise you'd be aware of this; And you certainly wouldnt' have given this film a 5 out of 10!

This is an excellent film; And it's unfortunate that this genre has been ditched by Hollywood, being that the gang life in California is far worse today than it was then.

...sorry to bust ya bubble, but the best prison movie is LOCKDOWN, and no other prison movie compares!!!

reply

from wha i hear the mexican mafia does exist and its soldiers on the streets are the surenos aka sur13....

reply

The Italian Mobster's son was raped by Puppet while the other Eme member held him down in the bakery room while they were having their little party. Puppet pounded him from behind really bad and stuck a big metal shank up his butt hole.

reply

not all surenos have connection to he mexican mafia.

The mexican mafia exists, and so does la nuestra familia.

Before my time is done, i will look down upon ur corpse and smile!!!

reply

Just because you are a southsider doesn't mean you are in the Mexican Mafia just like if you are northsider it doesn't mean you are in Nuestra Familia.

Sur13 and Norte14 are just soldiers NOT actual mafia members.
