yeah when santana got killed at the end was it by mundo? his childhood friend (not the white guy JD)... and if it wasnt then what happened to mundo? did he get killed by little puppet for making the northern gang or did he get sent to another prison?

It's rare to see an non-hispanic be a fully-certified/patched La Eme. It's not unusual to see the occasional white or asian to be seen hanging around with the hispanics as an affiliate. The heads sometimes do "race trading" because (in the case of JD/Joe Morgan), some guys grow up in a culture different from their skin tone and thus identify with it more. However, each prison is different and depending on the rules and politics of the shot-callers, anything's possible. It's interesting though to see some prisons like in Georgia that don't have the "Race Power Structure" unlike California and Arizona.
shareIn an earlier scene they actually kill one of their own because he was acting soft and not willing to do the job. They even say that by killing one of their own it earns them more respect from everyone else in the prison. So killing little Puppet and Santana is making sure other gangs don't find them weak and try to exploit it.

There was a Mexican Mafia member named "Jap Mike". Chino is based on him. JD is based on Joe Morgan (not the former baseball player, the career criminal), who was in the Mexican Mafia and was white.

In real life, Cadena was actually killed by another prison gang, La Nuestra Familia. The Mexican Mafia were outraged at the depiction of Santana/Cadena getting raped in juvie and the film's depiction of them killing Santana in the end and they murdered two of the film crew members to get their point across and apparently also attempted to extort Olmos.

JD orders the hit. It is evident in the way he looks at Mundo after he finished talking to Santana in prison. Santana started this trend of killing internally ironically because remember he orders a hit on Pieface for not being hard enough to kill his former "crime-partner". That is why Santana mentions it in narration as it having a high-price: one cost being his own life.
