Was Santana a rapist?

There's two scenes in this movie that implies Santana is a rapist. One when he tries to rape the woman like how he was raped.

The other one when the woman says about if she was a man in prison who he didn't like, "You'd *beep* me up the ass wouldn't you?"

These things seem to imply that Santana was a rapist and rapes men just like he got raped in first night in Juvey.

So: was Santana a rapist?

If so, what's the point of caring about him? He's no better than the rapist who raped him, and he doesn't deserve any sympathy or compassion at all if he's a rapist. He doesn't even deserve a movie about him that tries to paint him in an okay light, as this one does.

reply

No he wasn't a rapist. The scene where he is with Yolanda, I believe just shows the audience that he does not know how to make love like a normal person. He grabs her and turns her around and has his way with her. The director was just trying to convey the fact that Sanatana had been institutionalized.

Well, If a dog has only had sex with other dogs and then tries to have sex with a woman. How do you think he's going to do it?

There are Web sites for that.

You mean Julie?:) .. yes I agree.. during their last talk - Julie says he was two people.. one who doesn't know how to dance or make love - that's who she cared about. So as terrified as she was that was happening I think she came to understand and accept that he didn't know any better. He wasn't trying to hurt her but that's all he knew.. that's all he saw. He was a product of his environment. In his last letter to her, he says everything he learned ( reading, writing, making love) is distorted.

This guy has probably never been with a woman in his life. Any contact with a female would have been before he went to juvi, which means his was well under 18. He goes to juvinile detention and then goes straight to prison for 10 - 25 years. People have sex in prison, just not the kind of sex you want to be having. If that's all you know growing up it's going to mess you up. He was sexually dysfunctional, not a rapist.

reply

If what you guys are saying is accurate, then how come he didn't have a rebuttal when the woman said that if she was a man he didn't like in prison then, "You'd *beep* me up the ass wouldn't you?"

It stands to reason that if that was untrue, he would have been offended by her saying that and denied that it was true. His silence implies that he is guilty as charged about what she had said.

reply

She said something to piss him off, he responsed, "If you were a man... ". Meaning he'd kick her ass or something. She interjected and said "yeah, you'd F' me up the arse wouldn't you?". She was calling him out on his dysfunction, I guess he didn't have much to say about that.

Yes he raped guys in prison, that's a way of life in prison. You rape or you get raped. The weird thing is no one in prison considers this gay at all.

reply

Ok so then you are changing your original answer, and now saying that yes Santana was in fact a rapist?

reply

I suppose he's as much of a rapist as everyone else in prison. He didn't rape the woman and I doubt he would rape anyone, male or female, outside of prison. It's a grey area.

The weird thing? Not at all. Because rape is not about sex but about power and control. It is not lovemaking. So a man raping another man is not "gay". Rape is very powerful and overwhelming and intrusive. Please don't equate it with love in any way.

It is about power and control, not lust.

Actually that is part of the biological process. Even a rape victim can have an orgasm. It has nothing to do with desire. And most rape victims feel humiliation and shame that their body has reacted as such, when they had no control over that. Don't even dare try to say that a rape victim is not a rape victim because they had an orgasm. Maybe you should try to read up on it.

Sorry, but it is the MORE SO for him. Having a climax is the BODY'S way of responding, not the mind. Aggression is KNOWN to cause sexual arousal. You cannot be this narrow minded. Why not research it a bit.

By the way, I went to school for criminal psychology. I have studied this.

bmks - I've heard this line of reasoning from liberals and PhDs for decades. I still can't understand how anyone can get a boner, when he isn't turned on by what he's doing. I've been in fist fights before, and I never wanted to screw the guy I was fighting.

I think the prisoners have lied to you mental health professionals for so long that you'll believe any lie they tell you. The biggest lie is that if you spear another guys poo hole that you're still straight. It's total B.S., and everyone knows it.

Do some research on this film. One of the reasons the real Mexican Mafia supposedly had a hit out on Edward James Olmos is because they contested that the person Santana's character was based upon never raped anyone, man or woman.

Is he a rapist? Yes ... he had his manhood taken away and the dialogue with that woman at the end implies that during his time in jail he'd likely 'punsished' others by taking their manhood. However, the scene with the woman showed how disconnected he was by growing up in jail ... the woman agreed to have sex with him and maybe thought they were messing around, etc when he turned her over ... but then he didn't stop and instead of the front door he had sex the only way he knew how ... forced entry into the backdoor.

reply

watch the end again when he writes that letter, he says how in prison he knows who he is, can read, learn, live and love. a lot of sex inside prisons isn't rape at all, there is the hollywood image of prisons where all sex is forced and done with the ehlp of others but the real version is that a lot of people who have been locked up together for like twenty years and never seen a woman, just like anywhere else, find something in others they can love and express that through sex. a lot of people coming out don't actually want to 'come out' though so the stereotype gets perpetuated.

Is he a rapist?

Well, it is somewhat implied, but it is not specifically stated and it is pretty strongly implied that he did have sex with men in prison.

The sex scene with the woman shows that he is very unsure how to go about having sex with a woman since he is either a virgin to straight sex or he last had sex about 25 years ago when he was 14 or 15 (and probably not very experienced at the time). He is either copying what he witnessed (and what happened to him) or he is reverting back to the sex he had in prison (which would be rape, prisoners who are providing sex for protection, prisoners who are being extorted in exchange for sex, prison prostitutes, and probably not the few cases of consensual prison sex since that is almost always a death offense in most prison gangs) which would be rather rough and anal.

reply

To all of you, if you have anal sex does that mean men who have sex with other men; or men in prison are dysfunctional? No.

Prison is a very controlled and confined space. There is forced sex and consensual sex.

Santana is not a rapist perse, but he will have sex the way he has had sex before. We are not sure if all his sexual experiences in prison were rough and forced or nice intimate consensual sex.

When you're raped in prison, the only way to get respect is to kill and rape other people. That way people won't tend to mess with you, because if you get raped and don't do anything about it, then you're fair game, and you'll be passed around like a box of cigarettes. Life is barbaric prison, and the prison personnel don't care. So Santana probably was a rapist, like he is a murderer. And this movie definitely wasn't painting him in some kind of light. It's simply a story about a man who made the wrong decisions and made for them dearly.

reply

Sure it was. It portrays Santana as a victim of his circumstances who would have more or less been a nice & normal guy if only his environment had been kind to him.

In other words, it largely blames Santana's environment for all the bad things he has done rather than blaming Santana himself for choosing to do those bad things.

About the sex scene with the woman. From watching this scene and the fact that he had spent most of his life and all of his adult in prison tells me that he was a rapist that forced sex with a man. During the act he obviously was enjoying himself with the woman but in order to climax he had to get ruff with her, turn her over and rap her from the back (possibly imagining himself with a man) That scene alone answers the question for me. He was either a rapist of other men or he observed it and fantasized about it alot (which I seriously doubt).

reply

uh, just because he put his pee-pee up her hershey highway doesn't make him a rapist. like others have previously stated, he was just sexually dysfunctional.

I get the impression he had sex with men in prison but I doubt he just raped innocent people because he was a bad man.

It could be that he traded drugs or protection for sex. He could also use forced sex as a punishment against others that went against him. There could also be men that enjoy sex and would be willing to have sex with him.

I also don't get the impression Santana was supposed to be a good man. He does horrible things in order to stay on top. When he gets out he learns that he does have a good side about him, or he discovers his humanity and tries to become a better person. This in itself is what leads to his downfall.

It also seems that he knew his decision would get him killed but he would rather die with now having his humanity than having to go back to the way things were before.
