Is anyone else angry....(spoilers)
..that after all the fighting, all the court battles, all the efforts made, that when the guilty verdict was read, and the family could finally put the ugliness and shameful treatment to rest....
...that we see the script scrolling to state that the verdict was overturned because you can't sue government or their contractors (and I have no idea why you cannot; that is a law that must be overturned)???
I was furious. And heartbroken, and betrayed. Not the writers' fault if that's what happened. But it made almost everything that took place pointless. So they managed to clear the husband's name. The manufacturer's guilt, proved in court, now means nothing?
In Canada we have an odious "notwithstanding clause" that basically allows any province to override laws it does not agree with. Essentially thumbing its nose at the federal government. To date, only the racist province of Quebec has dared use this abhorrent "legal end-run" to its everlasting shame and that of the country. I felt that General Dynamics was NOT punished, was NOT forced to make amends, and do not know why they even bothered fighting the case if that is what they knew all along (or should have known). The whole thing stinks and the government, never an organization wholly trusted by the people, lets them down again.
If this is justice, I understand vigilantes a WHOLE lot more now. And what exactly is Janet supposed to tell Kiki? "Well, honey, they were wrong and the system found them so, but they get a "get out of jail free card" because they worked for the government, so they can never be held accountable for their actions. They caused your daddy's death but don't have to be punished for it."
Like I said, the justice system is supposed to prevent exactly these kinds of abuses. I am shocked that THIS is how it ended.
