Why is this called The Year Punk Broke?

When it's mostly about grunge and alternative bullsh!t? The ramones started in 1974.

IMBD Fail #2: "I didn't see this movie but..."

reply

Because Kim Gordon says this at one point in the movie.

*And actually after re-watching the movie I see that Thurston Moore also says it, but he is quoting a magazine article that actually says 1991 is the year punk "breaks through"

reply

Because 1991 is the year punk 'broke' - I.e. became popular on a millions-selling scale. It's not about the birth of punk or the beginning of punk, it's about punk rock finally selling millions and being used by Madison Avenue.

And btw punk began with Iggy & The Stooges circa 1969-70, not The Ramones 1974.

reply

In hindsight it should have been called "the year Rock died", but of course no one saw that coming at the time.
