The definite Vangelis album?
The question is hard to answer even for me a long-time fan and eager listener to his body of work, I like to say that nearly ALL of his albums are masterpieces and all albums and tracks define him as the Mozart of electronic music today. It was tough choice but
However, my choice for the definite Vangelis album is...

1492: Conquest of Paradise (the definite Vangelis album and my favourite. It's all here!)

Blade Runner (a describing soundtrack that is hard to describe)
Chariots of Fire (The Most famous theme in the World!)
Heaven & Hell (a very unpredictable "fusion meets classical" composition.)
Direct (especially 'Metallic Rain' and 'Message')
Albedo 0.39 (it's a mindbender, you never heard anything like it before)
Opera Sauvage (one word: L'Enfant)
Spiral (highly original especially the title track)
... also check out the wonderful mood for the soundtrack album "Antarctica".

It is not one but many albums that define him (which is so great about him), and few, or none, of his works are actually "bad". Well what do you think?

I would add a few Movements from Mythodea album - 4, 6, 8 and 9th.
And yes - the whole El Greco set - a true time traveling music, much like 1492.

I think you mean "definitive" not definite. Blade Runner is Vangelis' masterpiece, and The Bounty the most underrated.

I think so. It really takes you there. Daring, enchanting, atmospheric, adventurous, timeless... Goes on and on.

"The Bounty" and "Alexander" are also wonderful and too underrated.

I have many Vangelis albums, but I do not have this one. Based on this recommendation, I may just have to pick it up if I ever come across it.

My favorite Vangelis album: The City (1990).
