Do you think they will pull another Conan?

I have feeling they will fire Jimmy Fallon and bring back Jay Leno again. Just like what happen in 2009.

reply

More likely Leno will go to another network and be done with NBC. I'm betting on FOX and that Jay has multiple offers he is considering. He wants to go out in style so he's deferred any decision until after his last Tonight Show.

Everyone pretty much agrees NBC is rather incompetent when it comes to managing their late night schedule...the better question is: If NBC offers The Tonight Show back to Jay, will he accept it?

reply

NBC might ask, but from what he said on "60 Minutes" it sounds like Jay's not interested in doing talk shows anymore.

reply

True, but he'll get the itch. Remember when Oprah was interviewing him just before she left her show, he told her she would find herself back on TV and she said no? We'll she's back on TV, and so will Jay.

I think Fallon has a better chance of success on The Tonight Show than Conan did. I think he'll be fine. I would love to see Jay come back again but I don't see it happening. What would be cool is for him to be a guest every now and then and maybe do his Headlines or Jaywalking while there.

reply

He'll never retire as long as he can tell jokes and do stand-up. Can see him eventually coming back like Arsenio, but I think Jay's definitely had enough of getting fired from "The Tonight Show".

Jay knows he can't keep up. He knows he can't do a song and dance like Jimmy Fallon. He very aware of his age. Sure he'll still go on the road. He loves it. There's no reason Jay can't be a guest. Carson was a guest on Letterman.

Grands...Glad to see you come and glad to see you go

When Jay was praising Jimmy, Steve Kroft read my mind and said "You said all of the same things exactly about Conan." To which Jay replied, "Did I say the same things to you? Probably. Maybe I did. We'll see what happens."

Since we now know Jay never wanted to leave The Tonight Show the first time, and was more or less faking sincerity back then when he said it was the right time to leave, Conan was a great replacement, etc. how do you know he doesn't feel like that again?

We can't. Not for certain anyway. In fact, everybody in that drama seemed to reverse themselves. From Jeff Zucker who removed Jay, to Conan who'd assured execs he would change the show to suit their concerns, then ignored virtually every request they made before opting to leave when he couldn't have the show on his terms. Oh, and he initially said how glad he was that Jay would continue to be his lead-in at NBC. We know now he wasn't too sincere in that claim. But, somehow, I just think Jay's finally had enough of dealing with the powers that be at NBC. We shall see.

reply

I hope Jay was pulling the wool over Kroft's eyes and comes back a 3rd time! After all this show is uniquely his since Carson is no longer around!

reply

For better or worse, NBC is going full steam ahead with an entirely revamped and youthful late night line up. That's never been done before and it's certainly not going to be reversed. If for some reason it should flounder, I think we'll see an abandonment of late night talk show structure. It'll still be the Tonight Show, it just won't be the Tonight Show. Meaning no more traditional monologue, bit, guests, music routine.

reply

No. Back in 2009, Leno wasn't ready to walk away. He didn't want to leave. But Conan was nagging NBC about how he wanted the show and they ousted Leno in favor of grooming the new guy.

Unfortunately Conan didn't click with audiences. The ratings were terrible with him hosting and he was very unlike Leno, whos style of hosting people got accustomed to.

Fallon's style of hosting is very similar to Leno. And now Leno is willing to leave on his own term. Plus Fallon has resonated better with the mainstream.

reply

I hope not, so far they haven't even given Jay an earlier timeslot for him to see if he can screw up the ratings, and it is getting tiring with these changes in hosts even 4 years when the Winter Olympics come around.

reply

I don't think so. They're trying to go for a younger audience (who doesn't really watch talk shows, they'd rather watch netflix).

I don't see Jimmy Fallon pulling in Leno type ratings. His goofiness will turn off older viewers. But the days of huge ratings before there were a million cable channels to choose from are over.

Jimmy works cheaper so even if he is only half as successful as Jay NBC will probablky be in the same position they are now.

reply

That's just it. It's so nutty. They're gonna get half the ratings, but only have to pay an eighth of the paycheck, so it's still a big win for them in the books. Meanwhile, tv sucks.
