I just saw this pilot

Wow, was it awful. The casting was bad. Well, really it was just Craig and Chris who were bad. And the writing was pretty bad too. But I just didn't buy Craig as Lister. He didn't seem like a slacker slob. And the UK Lister had more of a rock vibe to him. So the US Lister felt really plain. As for the US Rimmer. I neer liked Chris as an actor. I find him very whiney and annoying. The thing that made the UK Rimmer so much better was that he came off as a rich snob who thought of himself as better than most, but was never good at anything. At least that's how I saw him. In the US version, Rimmer just wasn't funny. Rimmer is a very British character. Just as Basil Fawlty could never really be a US character cause he loses something when he's not British. I also think that they made the show too much like the UK version. They used all the model shots and made the set look very similar. I think they needed to give it its own look. I mean they put a mall in the ship (god knows why) but it still looked dark and gloomy.

What made me roll my eyes was how the actor took Rimmer's character & managed to make him seem like the most flamboyant homosexual there was. I'm not saying that as a derogatory remark- his interpretation of Rimmer made the character seem like he was in love with Lister.

If it had been intentional it would have been funny (since the original show played at that in one episode), but it wasn't & it made everything that much more poorly done.
