Why is Robert Llewellyn in this?

Who only british cast member to be in this, it was never clear why and I can't imagine why? not sure it's because they thought Llyewellyn was really an american or they thought Kryten was the selling point of Red Dwarf. It's like the american IT Crowd where they used Moss from the british show.

There's an American IT crowed?

Is it any good?

They also asked Chris Barrie and he turned it down because he already had enough going on in the UK eg The Brittas Empire. Red Dwarf didn't have the family-like dynamic of 3rd Rock From The Sun or The Big Bang Theory. RD was more about always pulling rank in a situation where doing so has few real world social benefits. It could have become a minor cult show but they cast someone who was charm personified as Lister which didn't entirely suggest that America wanted the grimy crudities of Red Dwarf. I think reasons run deep and, generally speaking, America accepts upper class Britain eg Hugh Laurie and cool, experimental Britain eg David Bowie, or 'comic book' Britain eg Mr Bean for a bit. But perhaps Red Dwarf has a scuzzy kind of class conscious based depth that doesn't entirely translate in a close enough way to truly be the same show. Or perhaps they shouldn't have tried releasing a sitcom in the 90s that looked like dreary series 1's gun metal grey. Friends and Frasier were imminent so America wasn't desperate for a US version. If they already liked the UK version it would be as something of a niche pleasure so why would they need one?

If you want an american for Kryten Robin Williams.
